Got THE email today
Been waiting since Dec 2014 for it. Shiela at Bighorn Armory needs my FFL info. They're building my 460 model 90 this week. Matt stainless 18" carbine, best grade walnut. Pics and a range report next week. Should have plenty of time to develop a cast bullet load in time for deer season.

Short, powerful, lever of real walnut and steel. What more could a man want? Well, without "other things" on his mind.
Looking forward to the pics and range report.

Doc, did yours come with holes drilled and tapped for their scope base? Or should I get on the horn and add it?

Just curious....Does the manufacturer approve of using .45s in it?

Re: Got THE email today
Blaine, single shot maybe. I had originally ordered it 454 Casull, but in the meantime I started casting, and have had some experience with the Casull round in a Ruger Super Redhawk. Small rifle primers just don't get it, and read how some re loaders were cutting back 460 brass for use in 454 Casulls (large rifle primers) for dependable ignition. So, after being assured that changing calibers would not add even one minute to the order time, went to 460. This rifle will probably never see full house jacketed ammo, but should be a great cast bullet shooter. Time will tell.

Re: Got THE email today
It came this evening. Not as heavy as I had imagined, compact and solid. Shoulders quickly and sights are right in the center of my eye when it comes up, no hunting for them. Marble aperatures fit the threaded hole in bolt peep sight. Action is pretty stiff, takes a pretty good push on the lever to get the carrier to flip up, and there's quite a snag on the way closed as the bolt pushes the carrier down, but it's getting better already. Will put on a leather glove and cycle it a hundred times or so and should cure what ails it. Wood is gorgeous. Will get pictures and a range report Sunday.

Get the lube off the action before you work it...it'll break in faster.Les Staley wrote:It came this evening. Not as heavy as I had imagined, compact and solid. Ha! Nice rifle Les and my favorite action I might add. As you stated, cast bullet shooting is gonna be a lot of fun. As for smoothing compound goes....like Blaine said, degrease it and add a bit of toothpaste or car waxing compound.------6Les Staley wrote:Maybe I'll just fill it full of sand.....
Re: Got THE email today
Actually, I wasn't kidding. You can work it a few thousand times with lube or 500 without it, or use it normally for the next 40 years. Your choice. If the trigger is a little gritty, you can gently push on the trigger while dry firing it with a snap cap.Les Staley wrote:Maybe I'll just fill it full of sand.....

Re: Got THE email today
Yep, Elmer Keith used to recommend that. He said to push on a cocked hammer and then slowly release the trigger....back and forth...back and forth. I've done this many times and it works. I usually just do as stated but I catch the hammer before it falls.----6BlaineG wrote:If the trigger is a little gritty, you can gently push on the trigger while dry firing it with a snap cap.

Re: Got THE email today
Here's the promised range report. First cast bullet load tried, Lee 311 gr gas checked sized 452, lubed w/ liquid alox /Johnson's one step liquid floor wax 50/50. 28 gr of 5744 shot good at 50 yds (target shown) but unstable at 100 yds. Need to warm them up a bit. Rifle action continues to loosen up and get smoother, but still a ways to go.

Beautiful rifle. Looks very handy and practical too. The swivel stud in the forend cap is a nice touch.

Re: Got THE email today
That IS a great looking rifle, no doubt. I don't know much about either round, but how does the 460 compare to the 444, in a levergun?

Re: Got THE email today
I don't see rifle ballistics on their website for the 460, but the 500 S&W version ballistics are a lot better from the levergun than the revolver, for sure... http://www.bighornarmory.com/downloads/ ... 9fd485e01/handirifle wrote:That IS a great looking rifle, no doubt.
