OT - War between the States - Part 9.

Post by Gun Smith »

I've just about gleened all the interesting stuff out of this little manual. So I'll wind this series up tomorrow.

Civil War Small Arms used by the Union Army were:
U.S. Model 1861 Rifled Musket Cal. .58.
U.S. Model 1855 Rifle Ca. .58.
Sharps Carbine Cal. .52.
Spencer Repeating Carbine Ca. .56.
Colt Navy Revolver Cal. .32.
Remington Army Revolver Cal. 44.
*Many other weapons were purchased privately and carried by many Officers and some troops. This list came from the book and is not complete.*

In one year (1864-1865) the Federal Military Railroad, with 365 engines and 4,203 cars, delivered over 5 million tons of supplies to the armies in the field.

*In what early silent movie did was a Civil War engine the star? What was it's name? Was it based on a real event? Who was the actor who starred in the movie? Any idea where it was filmed?*

Losses in killed, Wounded or missing. (Part 2)
UNION CONFEDERATE

September 19-20, 1863 Chichamauga, Ga. 15,851 17,804
May 5-7, 1864, Wilderness, Va. 37,737 11,400
May 8-18, 1864 Spottsylvania, Va., etc. 26,461 9,000
June 1-12, 1864, Cold Harbor, VA. 14,931 1,000
July 28, 1864, Ezra Chapel, Atlanta, GA. 700 4,642
May 5, Sept. 8, 1864, march to Atlanta, GA. 37,109 ------
April 9, 1865, end of hostilities. ------ ------
Lee surrendered 26,000
Johnston surrendered 29,924
Taylor surrendered 10,000
Sam Jones surrendered 8,000
Jeff Thompson surrendered 7,454
Kirby Smith surrendered 20,000

Number of engagements.
1861 156.
1862 564.
1863 627.
1864 779.
1865 135.
Total 2,261.

* It's interesting to note the way the tactics changed during the war from massed infantry charges against each other, to towards the end of the war where trench warfare became common, that this scenario of massed frontal attck over open ground was repeated by the European armies up until after the beginning of WW 1. And it took the machinegun to change that even then.*

Ahh...."The General"....a great movie that everyone should watch. Keaton was simply amazing. A couple of videos with bits of the movie:

It would be interesting to get a complete list of Union and Southern Arms together.....there was so much, foreign and domestic of every shape and size.

I suggest "Civil War Guns" by William B. Edwards.
