Thinking of moving to the Ames area to be closer to my daughter. Never been to Iowa in my life.
Would like to be within an hour of Ames. Any advice? Don't have a lot to spend.
Anyone here from central Iowa?

I was born in North Central IA. I haven't been back in 55 years and don't miss it at all. Iowa does have some good hunting these days , unlike when I was a kid .

No, not me.

Good people. Corn. Milo. Big-azz deer. Squill. Miserable winters and hot humid summers. Tornados and T-storms. Typical Midwest.

Not Central Iowa, but the Southwest corner, close to Omaha. I do have family in the Des Moines area and get over there about once a month. PM me if you have some questions specific.
I like Iowa and will probably never move away. I have a dream of living in Wyoming or Montana, but I would bet that my kids, wife and someday grandkids will keep me here. It's definitely got all four seasons, but spring and fall are generally way shorter than the other two.
Good luck with the move.

Daughter will be done with post-doctoral in a year and will be leaving Iowa, so I am turning my gaze toward New Mexico.
