Metal detector plunders, come on Six post em up.
We headed back in the hills today with the detector and walked the old RR grade, found a old camp along it and found some spirit bottles, a tea pot and a fry pan and spikes.
Also found a old 30 WCF case.

Re: Metal detector plunders
I gotta get in on this.
I got two good buds going at this now.
Of course, nobody up here throws anything away, and most everything they'd lose or leave behind is less than useless.
Lots of Natty Light cans though.
Good luck Pitchy! Strike it rich bro!

Thanks OldWin, don`t think we`re going to find anything of value but I love walking those old grades, they wind along small lakes and went across some.
I can vision those old steamers going down them tracks hauling logs out.
Do you have a lot of RR grades in your state?

Re: Metal detector plunders
There are some yeah. A lot are narrow gage. They are used a lot for four wheeler, snowmobile, and jeep trails.
Lots of old logging camps too, but harder and more work to get to.

Re: Metal detector plunders
I've got a few spikes too. That stuff is cool. I have to hike in and see those locomotives up in the woods.
I've always liked finding old stuff in the woods. Lots of old cemeteries and cellar holes grown up in the woods here.
Man, life musta been tough.

Me, I'd clean that 30WCF case up and reload it... And re-work the spikes into knives... Have 3 of 'em I found in my pasture... nearest rail lines are 9 miles to the south, and 5 miles to the north... but I have a pile of old ties out along the back fence line!

Re: Metal detector plunders, come on Six post em up.
Well Griff I don`t think ya would want to reload this one it`s pretty corroded.
I`ve made a few knives out of spikes before, these spikes are smaller than modern spikes which wouldn`t matter for knife making.
There aren't any ties left on these grades to old.

Something tells me that I'm responsible for Pitchy breaking out the metal detector. I must admit that I get a rush when high numbers show up on the display showing that it's a non ferrous item, but usually turns out to be a pull tab or a piece of aluminum. In the last couple of weeks I've found $2.54 in change....nothing older than 1969. LOTS of bullets and some pieces of old farm tools. Found an axe head and a piece of a plow that I know are from the 1800's.....extreme pitting.

Re: Metal detector plunders, come on Six post em up.
Thanks guys and the date lines up to the time someone would of been where it was found, closer to the 1800`s date imo.

Re: Metal detector plunders, come on Six post em up.
Couple years ago me and the family took my metal detector to and old cabin site on our property. Found pieces of the cook stove they left here, a horse shoe and some other plunder but no gold coins. The folks who lived in this dry camp were so poor they probly never had a gold coin. Root cellar hole is about filled in under where the log cabin was. We drilled a well there last summer and one of the boys is planning to site a house near there soon. Pretty house site, just no water.

Re: Metal detector plunders, come on Six post em up.
I better dig mine out after seeing all your neat finds!!
semi retirement coming up soon!!! there is a old trail from fort Laramie to the mts. & back some of it is still visible
they hauled every thing you could haul at that time up & down that trail, who knows what's still laying around
so far just old 50-70 or 45-70 casings & rusted iron
