Medical News: MRI's can be dangerous

Post by AJMD429 »

This from a physician friend's spouse.....

" My mom's minister was found in a coma at
home. VA put him in MRI without checking
for metal. The concealed weapon he had
discharged and shot him! Lucky he's alive...
! "

Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws
"first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.

Last year I got a scorpion tattooed on my lower left arm.....I forgot to ask if any of the colors had metal in them. I guess I'll find out at my next MRI

I work with MRI every day....having trouble thinking of the mechanics of how this could happen

often go into the edge of the room with my LCP still in my pocket, but that's not the same as being inside the magnet of course

Maybe I'd believe a part of the gun was stripped away to damage the machine, but I'm not buying that it "went off".

Firearms don't discharge when slapped semi-permanently against a liquid nitrogen cooled electromagnet.
OTOH, those EMs can do really bad things to embedded bits of ferrous metal...

Nothing thing a mobile MRI tech more than having to scram his chill.

I had a friend who was almost killed by an MRI.

Well it was shrapnel from an NVA mortar, but they didn't know there was any left in there. MRI moved it enough to nick something and he started bleeding internally. His wife found him cold and unresponsive in the middle of the night, his abdomen purple. If not he probably would have been gone by morning.

Years ago my wife took a patient down for an MRI. She was standing off to the side when they cranked it up and she said she could feel it tug her ear rings so she told the tech and got out.

unlike in the movies, the magnet is always ramped up and at strength....it takes many days to ramp it up to full field strength. the imaging is done by varying minor magnetic field gradients on top of the powerful base field of the magnet.

when you get right up next to the table the patient goes on, you can feel the pull on any ferromagnetic item you are wearing....it will ruin your wrist watch and erase your credit cards, etc.

I have so much metal in my body, surgical clips, metal plates, screws, washers. I remember the first MRI after the cancer surgery was a bit disconcerting getting on that table, but it didn't kill me.

Sure is loud in there.

SightHunter has Cochlear Implants. MRI would cause her a great deal of trouble. She has a Bracelet and a Necklace which both state that she has a Cochlear Implant.
