getting older but it's not so bad

Post by carbluesnake »

Read the 'Is it just me' column and got me to thinking. I look in the mirror and see an old man; will start getting social security checks this month, can't do pushups anymore because of a bum shoulder. So I thought, can an old man still be fast? Not real fast, just fast enough. At 7 yds, I have a steel IPSC humanoid target. With a jacket on and concealment rig (Milt Sparks Summer Special) inside the pants. With 10 draws single shot, all but 2 rds were center hits, the other two were hits but not within an 8 inch circle. My times were a low of 1.45 sec to a high of 1.62 sec. Most were 1.48 to 1.58. Not the fastest in the world, but will hopefully work if needed.

In addition to pretty good speed, most of us older folks have a smoothness to things like this bred from years of experience. That and being older, we are as easily rattled. Heck most of us have had enough good scares in our lives that we just seem to take in stride things that upset the young.

Well, I'm certainly not as fast as I used to be, but I've been told sometimes slower is better.

It is far more likely a person will 'mess up' a self-defense situation by failing to notice something is about to happen, or by over-reacting, under-reacting, or mis-reacting, than that they will just not shoot fast enough. I wouldn't worry a bit.

I'm 66 and a lot slower but mainly because I don't see the need for speed anymore......

Age and experience are good tools to use. Your times to draw and hit the target are not too bad. Situational awareness and good judgement should give you the time you need if you are required to draw and fire at an attacker. Knowing that you are getting older and not wanting to feel the pain of bruises when unnecessary is part of the good judgement that should come with time.

You know I've heard that. But no one has ever come back to confirm it. Well almost no one.
