Texas Rangers have their Winchester 1995s cut down.

Post by rangerider7 »

I thought this was an interesting paragraph from the "Texas Ranger Dispatch".

When 1922 dawned, it brought the usual assortment of scouting and reassignments, so Company D must have been busy throughout the spring. Will requested rifles from Captain Roy Aldrich in Austin, and he asked some modifications, which certainly included cutting back the barrels to sixteen inches or less to make them more manageable in the brush. Acknowledging the great number of Jo Tumlinson’s descendents in the Ranger organization, Aldrich later commented, “Have shipped the three guns to Captain Wright and trust that they will reach you promptly. Petmecky has named them the ‘Tumlinson Carbine’

I wonder what cartridge the Rangers preferred for their cut down 1895's? In 1922 was it perhaps the 30-06?

Rimfire, Captain Will Wright's was a 30-06. He later changed to a chopped 94 Winchester rifle with about a 15 inch barrel. The 95 is in San Antonio at the Buckhorn. The 94 is in the Hall of Fame at Waco.

I visited the Texas Ranger Hall Of Fame in Waco not long ago. Great way to spend a rainy afternoon for those of us who like history and old guns.

If you are in central Tejas in the Waco area, the Ranger Museum is a must.

Also the Tejas Republic Museum in Austin is also a great museum.

if i ever find a repro 1895 src, i'm going to cut the barrel back to 18". handiness will more than make up for the slight velocity loss in the 30-06. don't plan on any 400 yard shots, anyway. i don't want to pay more than $700, so it may be awhile.

I was born and raised in Colorado but must have lived in Texas or Arizona in a past life. Articles and movies about the frontier times and the Rangers really interest me and always have. Are there good websites for history that you guys like? Seems like when I google it brings up about a million hits and most aren't that good. I was accepted into the Border Patrol back in the 60's but on the same day I was offered the job I had for almost 30 years here. Always wondered "what if".

It is the "Texas Ranger Hall of fame" website under Texas Ranger Dispatch. It is their monthly website magazine. Great reading for people interested in Texas Ranger History. The museum is located in Waco, Texas.

Hey TMAN! Check the cableas.com website. I seem to recall a pretty good lookin (beat-up) 1895 carbine for around $800.
If you do not want it. I just may grab it! :D
