This is a new broken part

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I broke the pawl in a New Model Vaquero. I wouldn’t have thought it even possible!

Huh, wouldn't think that would break but anything is possible.
Better order 2 or 3 to have on hand just to ensure it never breaks again! :D

I wonder if Ruger is still casting those or if they are MIM. Sure looks like it is a casting.

Ruger to the best of my knowledge has always been pretty good on their warranty. HOWEVER, I would send it to Jeff Ault at Munden Sixgun Magic. I was about ready to sell my Ruger Flattop but decided to suck it up and spend the money. It was truly the best money I have ever spent on a gun.

Here is a Vaquero that he recently completed.

This is a part I can get from Midway for less than $5. I’ll fit it myself and have it up and running this week.

I don’t think you can fan a Ruger. Especially not this one.

That's impressive! I have a couple that would be good candidates.

I did my friend. I shoot my single actions a little bit but I don’t abuse them. This was really odd

I had two break on my flattop 44 Ruger sent me the first one and I sent it back when the second one broke, they ended up replacing the revolver. I also had one break on a Vaquero years ago. I hadn't fired more than a box through each revolver when the pawl broke.

This is odd. Definitely a casting. But I wonder what causes such a part to fail with no real lateral force being exerted.

That's a real puzzler all right. I would love to hear the comments in the Ruger service department.

I’m betting it’s some kind of flaw in the casting. I certainly didn’t abuse it in any way.

Spares are on the way and I think it will be relatively straightforward to fit a new one.

It’s been a while, but I believe I ordered a couple from midwayUSA a few years ago as back ups.

The only thing I have ever broken on a Ruger sixgun was back in the 1980's, I was dry-firing my old model Blackhawk at least 4 times a week. My dry-firing session was always a half hour to 45 minutes. One day as I was dry-firing I heard something hit the floor and when I went to cock the gun the hammer spur was missing. It had popped off. I recovered it, took the hammer out of the gun and went to a friend's shop and welded it back on. It was still running 20-some years later when I sold the gun.

My experience has been similar. I’m treating this as a strange anomaly.

I ordered a Ruger .41 mag from an online dealer earlier this year. It appeared to be unfired although listed as a used gun. I took it out the first time and it wouldn't fire; the primers showed very light hammer strikes. With the trigger held back it was evident that the firing pin protrusion was insufficient. My first guess was that the transfer bar was too thin. I had a spare transfer bar and my micrometer showed that the spare was considerably thicker at its end than the one in the gun. I exchanged them, then ground a small amount off the nose of the hammer and the gun has functioned perfectly since then.

Well this gives me the opportunity to polish the internal parts prior to fitting the new part.:)

But this is interesting!!

This is the grip frame underneath the slot for the pawl.

Good grief! I'm surprised you can't see/feel that on the underside of the grip frame!

I doubt that's from the factory but who knows. In any case the last person to assemble it was evidently a graduate of The School for the Mechanically Declined (yes, that's a Far Side reference).

I agree. It didn’t come out of the factory like that.

I figured out the divot in the grip frame. From a post on the Ruger Forum:

It means that the little finger at the bottom of the pawl strikes the grip frame every time the hammer falls. That explains the divot.

This is a new one on me.

The new part was polished up and installed with little effort.

But it does appear that my locking bolt comes back up too soon and thus drags across the cylinder.

I need to figure out how to fix this. But the gun is up and running again.

Looking at your picture, it appears the divot is machined into the frame BUT it is distorted and bigger with the new damage from the broken pawl.
I almost think you should contact Ruger and say you want a new frame to replace your damaged one. Who know this might be a first of this failure for them.

Scott, to reduce or eliminate the cylinder stop drag on the cylinder, the cylinder stop must be depressed for a longer period of time throughout the cylinder's rotation. The small plunger on the base of the hammer contacts the back of the angled portion of the cylinder stop and as the hammer is rotated back, the plunger moves up until it drops off the end of the cylinder stop, which then contacts the cylinder. Thus, the longer the L-shaped, angled portion of the cylinder stop, the longer it will remain away from the cylinder. An oversize cylinder stop is available from Grandmaster (Power Custom) but be prepared to spend a lot of time taking your gun apart through trial and error. You will have to thin the cylinder stop until the locking end fits perfectly into the cylinder stop notches and shorten the angled portion of it to achieve the result you want.
