Loading berrys 38 plated bullets

Post by mickbr »

Folks just wondered if one can use the same data for plated bullets as for cast? Looking to try some 158gn plinking loads with small charges of clays. I normally play around sub 3 grains with this powder but being plated I'm assuming I should err a little heavier to ensure bullet exits barrel?

A coworker ruined a $450 pawn shop find colt python with berry wadcutters and too little bullseye. Even with the bulged forcing cone and gouged bore from the tools used to remove the bullet(s) he still profited four-fold when he sold it.

The colt "snakes" , even broken ones go for much $$$$ these days.

I use a lot of plated .38 and 45acp bullets.
Yes, if you use light cast loads you WILL get squibs. Ask me how I know.
For a 158rn in .38, I use 4.5gr of Unique. The same bullet in .357 gets 6.5gr.
The .357 load muzzles 950 from a 4" S&W 66 and 1350 from a 20" Rossi 92. I haven't chrono'd the .38 load, sorry.

I tried plated bullets, maybe 1,000. I loaded them with cast bullet data. FWIW, I found no benefit for using plated bullets over my cast, leading free boolits...

I switched to plated from my cast in my high volume handgun cartridges to save my lead supply for those that need it.
One benefit is they are much cleaner when loading with my Dillon. No lube or lead to clean from the dies.
