Convert a Rossi Model 92?
I have a Rossi Model 92 stainless steel lever action carbine in 44 Magnum. I also have stainless steel Rossi 92 45 Colt barrel, magazine tube assembly, and lever. How difficult or costly to convert the 44 Magnum to 45 Colt?

You would most likely need .45 Colt cartridge guides (or enlarge/deepen the rim recess in the .44 Mag guides) because the .45 has a larger rim diameter than the .44.
IDK if the magazine throat in the front receiver wall is the same size for the .44 & the .45, and may need to be bored out slightly to accept the .45 magazine.
As far as the cartridge guides & magazine throat go, I would try a .45 cartridge case in both the .44 magazine & the .44 cartridge guides to see if the .45 will feed - if it does, then it's just a barrel swap & fitment (check for correct headspace).
Ditto, the bolt face may be OK for the .45 Colt.
Also, pray that the .45 barrel indexes like the .44 barrel does, lest the sights on the .45 barrel be canted after the barrel's swapped out.
Please let us know how you make out.

The 45 barrel could always be adjusted to fit properly by 'setting it back' but now a lathe is required. And then you would have to chase the chamber and headspace.
I'd keep the 44 as is and just get a 45 as another gun...

It can be done, but saner to sell the 44 and buy a .45 Colt rifle.
My cousin has converted more than one Ruger 77/44 to a .45 Colt. With integral suppressor.

Everything is the same except the cart guides. Even the 44mag guides can be used if you remove enough material from the back of the right side guide to allow the 45lc to pass through.
The one problem you may run into is barrel stub threads. Basically the pre 2000 barrels had different threads than the post guns. If both barrels have the same sight setup, as in the front sight is integral with the front barrel band (pre 2000) or if both have dovetails for the front sights (post 2000) it should work in your reciever.

Steve:
Many thanks for your reply. From it I believe that Kris Bonner, a competent local gunsmith, would be capable of doing the entire conversion at a price I can live with, or could complete indexing the barrel were I t try the conversion myself.
As far as I can tell, mechanisms are identical. The only way I can confirm whether barrel threads are compatible is to remove the 44's barrel for thread mic'ing - I think.

again if both barrels have the barrel band front sight or if both have the dovetail cut for the front the threads will be the sameNaphtali wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 9:22 pm Steve:
