Remembrance Day 2016

Post by mark »

11-11-2016, 11am.

I don't know if you observe it over there.

My grandfather served in France from 1917 to the armistice.

It was nice to see the local pub lower the flag from 10.30 am and raise it by the time we came back at midday.

It seems that not many people care, or are aware.

Respectfully yours, Mark.

Remembrance Day is well observed in the UK.

Lest we forget.

My paternal grandfather served in Europe during WWI. He was killed there but didn't die until after he got home. Gas didn't kill all of it's victims immediately.

about ten years ago, I was doing a back injection on an elderly lady, on nov 11th. to my delight, she said it was her birthday, and in fact she had been born on November 11, 1918 !! the actual armistice day. I expressed my amazement at this....and although she was mentally sound etc SHE SAID SHE NEVER EVEN REALIZED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DAY SHE WAS BORN !!!!

jeesh, and here we have been thinking it's just the millenials and snowflakes who are ignorant.

It's called Veteran's Day here now. I went to a program at my 12 year old daughter's school today. Very nice with patriotic music, poems and a reception for we old soldiers. I had sweet tea and an oatmeal cookie.

My son hiked a 4,300' mountain in NH this morning -- he wants to hike all of the >4k mountains* -- and he carried an American Flag on his pack in remembrance of Veterans Day and his late grandfather.

He did that on his own, and I thought it was pretty cool.

...*And he's already hiked all the up to the summit of Mt. Washington too. (While I drove up it once...)

Veterans Day here, but it did start as Remembrance Day.

My grandfather was a WWI vet. Passed away before I was born. :(

We observe Remembrance Day here. Just watched heart wrenching documentary, The Black Watch Snipers, very powerful. The Commonwealth served beyond thier duty.

My family, three uncles, served with the Loyal Eddies (Loyal Edmonton Regiment. Served in England standing on the wall in early 1940. Fought in Italy and the lowlands of Holland and Germany. Canada's best.

Funny story, they were mustered often to march on the cliffs of England in sight of the German telescopes. They wanted the enemy to think Fortress England had many divisions. My one uncle, quite a character, said they had no rifles to march with so they marched with painted broom handles. His comment, the silly bu##ers didn't have enough of them either.

Sadly they are all gone.
