Jacketed 255 grain Bullets for a 38-55

I need to know a source of jacketed flat nose bullets for reloading Winchester 1894 lever action ammo in 38-55 caliber. I would like to find approx 255 grain bullets with the crimping groove in the correct place for those bullets. I'm thinking that the bullets would need to be between .378 and .381.

If jacketed bullets as described above are not available commercially, is there a bullet mold out there that I could get that throws lead bullets at least .378?

You might try Barnes, had some years ago
have a few molds I use but the Lee casts out at 380 - 381 with WW it worked best with a old 94 I had
but at 381 I had to use starline brass as Win. brass wouldn't chamber
Lee mold is 379 - 250 RF sized at 379 I can use it in 2 other guns with Win brass

If you cant find barnes bullets try Hawk bullets, crimp them where you want to with a lee factory crimp die (FCD). danny

Like the Hawk bullets Danny just linked, the Barnes were available in .375 and .377 diameter. That's it. They seem to work OK in larger groove diameter guns though. Some guys here have used them and had good results, Hobie may be one of them.


I had a barrel made up in .375" groove, a modified 375 H&H barrel, just to make finding bullets easier. Havent gotten the rest of the gun operational yet though. Its a parts like with many parts not present yet.

LBT molds, you tell him what diameter you want.. and that is what you get
I have order for other calibers getting a diameter that is big enough to allow enough sizing them back down to what I want. Excellent quality!

I've got some surplus to me Barnes Original, 38/5520, 38/55 - .377 dia, 255 grn, Flat Nose, Cannelured bullets.
Total count 177. You can have the lot for $100 plus $10 flat rate box shipping to lower 48.

I've sold off all of my 38-55's.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think that I will try that Lee mould (DC 379-250-RF), and try to cast some. With the right lead alloy, its sounds like they could drop from the mould between .379 and .380.
