Re: 137 Years Ago Today....
One of the most misunderstood battles in our history. I have been told by officers that visited the site that once you are standing there on the ground, the events of the fight fall into place.
Talked to a guy whose great, great grandfather was sent to survey the battlefield some time after the fight and picked up two rifles. One was a lever action and one was a carbine with gov't markings. The lever action was non-functional from rust, and the single-shot carbine was functional, somewhat. This guy's father gave one to him (carbine) and one to his brother, but his mother later gave his away when he was a teenager to some guy she was trying to impress.
I'd like to see the site some time, too.

Had Custer been more conversant in Sun Tzu, he might not have been where he was....Lately, as I grow older, and see what's happening today, I root a bit more for the Injuns than I used to...

137 years ago today, people were more Free to do what they wanted - so long as they didn't directly hurt others, and the Fed Gov was still more interested in Subjugating Free People (if only the non-white ones) than letting them live a productive life outside of jackboot interference...BlaineG wrote:Had Custer been more conversant in Sun Tzu, he might not have been where he was....Lately, as I grow older, and see what's happening today, I root a bit more for the Injuns than I used to...

I made a visit in 1978 and would strongly recommend doing so if the opportunity arises. As Pitchy says, it is a sobering experience and my feelings then were similar to what I felt when I visited Culloden/Drummossie a few years later.Pitchy wrote:I`ve been there, it`s a sobering place looking at how scattered a lot of the places men died at.

Shasta check out the Nez Perce running battle for 1100+ miles with the US Calvary in 1877 from Oregon to the Bear Paw Mtns in Montana 18+ battles took the lives of 100 of the tribe and 100 troopers the odds were 800 men women and children against 2000 troopers, the battlefield in the Big Hole and the Bear Paws is interesting. The were trying to get to Sitting Bull in Canada as their allies the Crow turned them down. danny

Parked the semi one night on the on ramp at Gerryowen. Next morning walked over to the museum/C-store for coffee..got to talking with the gal at the desk of the museum and found out that the store/on ramp/and I 90 at that point are all right in the Indian camp at the time..on the way back to the truck picked up an empty cartridge case...308 Winchester.....Now I know why the Indians won....YMMV...Les

Re: 137 Years Ago Today....
Amazing how many battles and even wars have been lost in the last 2000 years by not following the principles of a book (The Art of War) written somewhere around 250BC. This is part of the reason Custer ranked last in his class at West Point, the book was and is mandatory reading.BlaineG wrote:Had Custer been more conversant in Sun Tzu, he might not have been where he was....Lately, as I grow older, and see what's happening today, I root a bit more for the Injuns than I used to...
Believe the Indians used principle # 4, Custer none.
