Custom holster maker

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Hi fellas -

Do you have a custom holster maker, that doesn't charge a crazy amount, that you recommend?

I'd like to have a fantasy gun belt and holster made - well, the rig worn by my nom de guerre, the Ysabel Kid, in the J.T. Edson western book series. It is a buscadero rig, like the ones used in 1950's westerns (not an authentic rig actually used in the true west in the day). I want one in black, smooth leather. Here's the custom part though - I need the holster to hold a Colt (well, Uberti reproduction) Second Model Dragoon, and it needs to be a left-handed holster placed on the right side of the belt (so carrying the gun butt-forward) for a cavalry-twist draw. The gun belt should be fairly standard, off the shelf affair, as many makes make them. The hard part if finding a holster in that style (able to connect to the belt through the lower slot) that fits the large Second Model Dragoon - and a left-hand draw on top of that.

Any ideas?

I always thought the Dragoons were horse pistols. Thats a big piece of iron. Sounds interesting though.

I’m not sure I know of anyone who could make it reasonably.

Do you have a saddle shop anywhere near you?

I always thought that the Walker and Dragoon revolvers fell into this general category despite Josey Wales, Mattie, and Gus.

However, I have no objection to anyone who wants to carry such a weapon.

I use a guy here in N Idaho, web sight is :
“ Lever gun leather works” he has made me not only odd leather for lever guns, but I’ve had him make me all styles of Sixgun holsters and styles, even the custom African scoped long barreled revolver bandoleer I had envisioned.
His name is Chance, but he goes by “Lever”
I really like his Levergun butt stock covers too

Thanks fellas. As I said, "fantasy rig". The Walker and Dragoon series were indeed "horse pistols" (and marketed as such by Colt). The 1851 and 1860 were "belt pistols" and the 1849 was a "pocket pistol" (along with the 1862 Pocket Navy and Pocket Police). The definitions could be a bit loose, as some of the smaller pocket models had longer barrels, but given the weight of the horse pistols, I doubt a lot of them were carried on the belt. Then again, a lot of surplus guns out of the Civil War stayed in use for decades. Many just saw no point in replacing a perfectly good firearm, especially if you were not likely to get into an affair needing speed or more than six shots. If you were, the speed of drawing a horse pistol would certainly put one at a disadvantage (unless you were the outlaw Josey Wales ;) ).
