He said he added a cocking handle to the slide. I guess that is how you load the first round.

Latest Rifleman has an article about Rugers 75th anniversary. That rifle is shown. I haven't read the whole thing yet but I see that Strum died from hepetitus - I knew he died suddenly but never knew what from.
