Marlin JM 2001 336W, 30-30, with “Texan” /straight stock
I just bought this JM 336W from a private owner in New Hampshire. He switched the pistol grip plain stock, to a Texan straight stock configuration along with a straight lower trigger tang and a straight finger lever. He also had installed a Beartooth safety delete. I install these in all my cross bolt safety Marlins.
Since I took possession of it I changed the front stock to a Boyd slimmer one as well as installing a standard rear sight. Really pleased with this. I have far less money in it than I would have in a real Marlin Texan model.

That's the style I like, straight stock, looks great. I like the way they carry too.trooper joe wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2024 7:47 pm I just bought this JM 336W from a private owner in New Hampshire. Same here, it really looks so much better this way. I had mine rebarreled to 25-35 with the barrel being 18". Also slimmed down the forearm by getting rid of the belly and some of the width to be even with the barrel band. Beautiful little carbine and caliber.

That is the prettiest straight-grip conversion on a 336, I have ever seen.

This is a photo of the model”60” rear sight that was on the gun when I received it. The bottom photo also shows the sling loop on the rear barrel band. I have since installed a standard rear sight and cut off the sling loop on the barrel band.
The bottom photo also shows the original, thicker. front stock as I received the gun and before I installed the slimmer Boyd front stock. I am looking for an as new rear barrel band without the sling attachment fittings since I like these better. I was thinking about XO sights but I think the standard Marlin sights may look better.

Can't figure out why any fool ever put a pistol grip stock on a lever gun. Makes working the lever a pain in the butt. Then again, I can't count the number of folks I see taking a levergun from their shoulder to work the lever. I'll ask them if they do that with a bolt gun. The answer is inevitably no. But a few have admitted that this is the way they've seen it done in the movies.

Agreed about pistol grips on lever guns. The only ones I actually don't mind is the Win 65 and Win 71, although if there were a choice between pistol grip or straight stock on either, I'd take the straight one every day of the week.

I don't buy pistol gripped Marlins, but this old '55 Ballard rifled 35 sure scratched all my itches. It had been used just hard enough to be treated like a working gun. It shoots good too. Three 200 grain Sierra SP from 200 yards, butt in the grass with my elbows rested on my knees.
Marlin fully understood America's love for Winchester's little saddle gun and they ran this ad in the July 1952 Edition of Outdoor Life. I'd say the effort was a success.

That 1952 ad with the "Texan" carbines shows them with rounded levers. Mine is later and has a squared one like the OP's. When did Marlin make this change over?

I really like Trooper Joe's Marlin! Is it just a matter of swapping out the fore grip and stock? I only own one Marlin and it's a Mod30 TK with a Texan stock. I may be picking up a 336 next week and would love to convert it. Any suggestions? I looked on line but keep finding plastic tactical stocks.....

I've had good luck with Ebay for gun parts. Some of it is over-priced but what's available changes constantly. If you're patient and persistent, you'll eventually find it there.jkbrea wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 10:34 am I really like Trooper Joe's Marlin! Try Boyd's, pick your color laminate or 3 grades of walnut.

Very nice, congratulations.
I like both straight stock and pistol gripped, but there is something nice about the way a straight stock carries and points. I know I love my Winchester 94. Of course they came in the straight stock configuration mostly, whereas the Marlins were pistol gripped.
