336 Day

Post by Drawdown »

Well I hadn't fired a shot since last winter, and had neglected my Marlin for several years! Made up for both other day, glorious day to be out, I do love my shooting range!

Sorry for the upside down pic, I don't know how change it? But I shot my 160gr Hornaday ftx & LVR at 60 yds with the barrel sight. Only three shots. I got excellent accuracy & poi! Then I checked my tang sight for first time with this load. The sight is adjusted as far down as possible, hit about 6" high at 140yds so by shooters calculator & this load I figured aprox 225yds zero, good group!

It's an excellent hunting rifle, and I have recovered all game I've shot at with it. Made in 77, and I got it in 81 from original buyer.

There's nothing like being out in the woods with a 30-30. Soothing and peaceful.

Beautiful fall feel in those images, DD. Nice to get out with a levergun. I'll be checking my loads as well, later in the week when it gets warm again.

when I click on the images they open right side up. they are really beautiful images. I think if you resize your photos to something like 800x600 they may stay right side up, might be worth a try . . .

My targets. I had some round foil taped on the bottom targets for better visibility.

I chrono the first 3 shots, velocities based upon them.
Well you're right Grizz, when I click on em, they're right side up!
That sizing, I've tried figure out before, but IDK. My phone takes pics in 4 sizes I use the smallest. Don't have a clue toward resizing!

I agree completely! I growed up only a squirrel hunter, I've killed a train load with an iron sighted 22, plenty with scope too. Deer hunting here was about useless in 60's-70's. But started picking up in 90's, still nothing great but in last 10 years I love it!
But I have 2 30-06, a 270, 7.62x54R, and 3 30-30's, a bunch 22 squirrel rifles. The bolt 30-06 will drill fine cloverleaf holes at 100yds, it's incredible rifle. But from thoughts and reading during growing up, a lever 30-30 was all I wanted. My first payday when I went to work after HS, I bought a Marlin Mod 39 for my squirrel rifle. But I just love every detail of the 30-30, makes me just feel at home, and running woods with my dad and old friends even tho he wasn't a deer hunter, but he was a squirrel hunter like there's been very few!!!
Anyways, this is one fine hunting rifle that my Mod 94's have caused me to neglect too much!
I have no doubt that with this rifle, right load I could kill most the squirrels I shot at out to 50yds!

If you can sight in and verify that 225 yards or so zero, that's pretty much going to be the ideal setup for about everything....!

I'm going to do this soon, already getting me a couple targets ready. Big O for a definite sight picture. Problem here is finding a safe place to shoot that far. Plenty places to shoot "Tom Horn Style", rocks or logs, but I want to put it on paper, or I may just use a steel gong.

Nice 336. Looks like it is still in excellent condition. I hope you get a nice one with it.

Brought this back up, cause I'm taking it shootn as soon as weather & time permits, hopefully this week! And I haven't had it in deer woods since 2018, so I'm thinking I need to remedy that this fall! Killed my best ever buck with it in 2017, but only a coyote and turkey with it in 2018. But I'm wanting to try the 160ftx loads at 200yds +, but it's long 4w ride to a safe place for that, and that's doubtful on a cold day, but hopefully soon?
I've been studying up on the forerunner, the Mod 36, and I'm about done buying any rifles, but a Mod 36, especially in the 24" barrel half mag I'd probably drain my wallet if in good shape, maybe! And maybe even a jm 336a of the same configuration!

And that reminds me I need to finish filing the new, higher front sight for my Model 36. I have heard some states allow the use of rifles in turkey season. Did you use a special handload for the work?

Yep. It's like poetry.

What kind of gun you have sets the mood.

30-30 levergun
32-20 levergun
22 LR semiauto
22 LR single-shot
30-06 bolt action
5.56 AR15

Each conveys an ambiance and sets the mood. :D

Bill I used factory Remington CL 150gr. I was on some friends property in another state, turkey not legal with a rifle in KY.
But I agree, it's hard to beat a 30-30 for year around woods rifle! But I would like to tried a 32-20, but never had opportunity!

I thought I'd share these pics I took on a very long deer scouting walk I took first week Nov, just prior to our rifle season. I carried my Mod 94 and took a predator call and tried for a yote. Good place to do so, because I spent 150+hours in a deerstand just down below here, close to highway. Never layed eyes on a deer, but they're there! But I saw yotes

or bobcats there a bunch times!

In that first pic, the big hollow back in behind that lone naked tree is where I killed my buck Nov 11, about halfway up mountain. I live down at mouth of it, to the left of the pic.

Sorry for the double pic, and my world is upside down! Hope you can click on it be right?
But a predator call here in daylight is usually a waste of time. Best calls are a young turkey sound or a fawn distress call!
