That's a good combination. Here's mine ... Rossi .357 octagon barreled rifle. I shortened it to 18" and worked over the action. The pistol is an old model Ruger .357 flattop from the 1950's.

Nice set up Pat. Don't get much better. I pair my R92 .357 20" SRC with a Ruger New Model Flat top 50th Anniversary model 4 5/8". Both carry nice.

I've got an old Interarms imported 20" carbine in .357.
I keep it in the Jeep in a military breachers scabbard hooked to the rollbar. I usually pair it up with a 5.5" 2nd Gen Colt SAA in the same chambering.

I could also use a nice 4 5/8 Flat top Ruger Blackhawk, but I got it from Sixgun. I know he'd be pizzed at me if I carried it with a Rossi. :D
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I can't decide between my 20" carbine and my 24" rifle with my Uberti SA Cav model pistol, all in .357 mag for my woods walking up in the Rockies. While the rifle is heavier to carry, it's considerably more accurate even out to 300 yds.

But truth be told, I take the carbine most of the time as the peep sight on the rear of the bolt gives me great accuracy out past 200 yds and the lower weight and better balance is a winning combination.

The pistol is mostly used as a close in plinker except I load the first chamber with a shot gun rd in case of rattlesnakes which are common here in Colorado. You can never be too careful.

.
In the 'good old days' the practicalities of frontier life made it helpful to have a carbine and pistol, or rifle and pistol, in the same cartridge. During the latter half of the 20th Century, we were so affluent, and so few of us had a 'frontier' lifestyle, that the utililty of a 'combo' was pretty minimal. Nowdays though, with gun laws, and the price and availability of ammo and/or reloading components, it is getting to be more sensible again.

The 'pistol caliber carbines' are thusly very popular now - either 357 Mag in a revolver and levergun, or 9mm in a semiauto pistol and carbine. Others, like 44 Mag, 45 Colt, 45 ACP, 10 mm, or whatever, make similar sense.

'Better' long gun cartridges like 223 Rem or 308 Win or 35 Rem or 444 Marlin exist, but aren't practical in handguns.

One of my favorite combos; a JM Marlin 1894CB (Skinner aperture sight) with a Colt New Frontier, both in .45 Colt.

Of all my guns, these two are my favorites. The Winchester Trapper in .357 stays next to my bed and goes along on long trips and RVing. The 3" 686 S&W is my daily carry and it's a 7 shot.

I have the Rossi 357 Magnum and a S&W Nickel Plated 586 which I bought back in the early 80's
I like having a few guns that shoot the the same shells.

Or 1 gun that can use different shells like the 4-5/8 Great Western 45 Colt convertible with a 45 ACP Cylinder

or the Glock 26 gen 3 that I carry in my Khaki's pocket every day,a Glock 9mm will shoot a 9mm And a 380 acp although it wont cycle the slide with the 380 reliably.

And with a Glock 21 45 acp I have a Storm Lake 10 MM barrel so I can shoot 45,10mm,40S&W or 45 Super with just 2 barrels.

While I like the Idea of a same chambered Carbine or Rifle combo I also like the idea of having guns in different calibers in case I can't find ammo in one chambering, I can hopefully find ammo for a different gun.

And I imagine there have been more than a few times When a Cowboy had a 44-40 rifle and a 45 Colt Pistol and if he could not find 44-40 ammo was glad he could find some 45 Colt, and vicey - versey.
I suppose ammo shortages can happen at any time and anywhere.

Now ,if I could Just find some Remington #10 or CCI #11 Percussion caps that weren't as high as a cats tail .....

They are not "high" ... your money just is not worth as much as it used to be so it takes more of it. You just have to work at adjusting your view of it. I know it's hard. I'm 77 and can remember what I paid for ammo, caps, powder etc. but those days are gone. -sigh- I just determined that it's only worthless money and I can't take it with me when I die.

Well there is a lot of Truth in what you say ,and it is hard to get used to for sure.
Of course there will always those who would sell at a higher price than they ought to but I think the main thing is Not being able to find them where a man cannot just drive down to a store and pick them up anymore,at least I cant.
Now I have to find them online Period, then end up (if I can find them at all )have to do an order of a couple of Hundred Bucks just to pay for the hazmat charge.
Sure is a lot of difference between the way Men Wish things were and the way they Really are ain't it  Ha
Thanks Jim

For other Members who may be reading this
I Just checked Remington,Check local stores for availability ,Midway out of stock Notify me,Brownells out of stock Notify me

Grafs No Remington or CCI or Winchester only RWS and dont know how they would work for my Pietta Remington New Army pistols ?But wow they are such a bargain at only about $400.00 per thousand and before taxes and Haz Mat.!!

Natchez out of stock,Bass pro at the Pyramid in Memphis TN does not even show them listed,Sportsmans Warehouse in Mississippi out of stock.
Maybe I am just not looking in the right places?

Cant find Remington #10 or CCI #11 anywhere .
If anybody knows where I can find them at a decent price ,I would appreciate it if you would let me know where.

Oh ,I did find some on Gunbroker but Heck will freeze over before I pay those kind of Prices ,I like shooting the cap and balls for the History behind them but I will turn them into wall hangers if need be.
I know,I know my Choice.

I just thought of another choice ,I could get back into reloading and actually Thumb my proverbial Nose at inflation and shoot my Centerfire guns cheaper .
Maybe I am just not looking in the right places ?

It is what it is

Showed in stock on the web page I guess they don't always update correctly. I would cal CCI and ask them to buy direct if possible. Tell them none in stock anywhere which is accurate.
They sell ammo direct so should be able to buy caps.

Been meaning to get these out in a while. Not a vintage set, but both are great shooters.
I don't have many .357s, more of a .44/.45 guy but they are fun.

Marlin 1894 C - all factory original. A Ruger Black Hawk "Flat Top", serial # 1XXX, frame going to plum as they do. :D The grips were from Klamath River, and look more like aged ivory in person. I had these custom made before the craze of several gunmakers coming out with Gadsen flag inspired grips. Not saying I started the craze... just got out ahead of it. Unfortunately the grip maker passed away from cancer a year after making this set and one for Y2K's Ruger Bearcat.

I don’t have any .357 rifles as none were made before WW1 so I put up a couple of middle to late 50’s Ruger Flattops in 2 barrel lengths.

If you got a compliment on all your classic guns you've posted, we'd need a thread dedicated to them! Hmmm🤔...maybe a gun calendar...

JK, thanks bro………I’m probably the poorest guy on the board never making more than 44K…….I collected these guns over the course of a half century, always trading up……it truly was a second job that required a massive amount of dedication and knowledge….the knowledge part was easy….I just bought books.

People call me a show off when I look at it like what can be done with dedication, knowledge and finally reaping the fruit of the sweat and time I expended.

It is not showing off one iota. I know I am not the only one who very much appreciates seeing your fine collection. I have a lot of working guns, and some pretty ones, but few true classics. If I had to do it all over again. Of course, you started a bit earlier than me!
