There was some great music in the early eighties though country and western had definitely took an obvious discothèque & shopping mall pop lean what with all of those crossover singles on the radio. Anybody remember those so-called country romantic duets that got played on the top 40 am & pop fm stations ?
Well there was one act you could depend on and that was merle & the strangers. I recently rewatched an interview video where
mister haggard said that this song was far closer to "personally real to him" than either "okie from" or "fighting side".
I was just a wee pup of 14 the summer that the song started playing on the radio. I remember a creekside juvenile social soiree with a volunteer amateur disc jockey playing from the radio/cassette player of an open topped jeep. Some inebriated older kid yelled "turn that country s--t off !" when this song began to play. He was promptly and not gently tossed into tortuga creek along with his def leopard & van halen cassettes.
