The one on the left has five threads of my hair and the other has one thread of horse hair. :)
No snow yet and they don`t show any coming in the near future.

Did you get your roof fixed yet? I remember last winter you had to prop your roof with a pole for all the snow that was on top.

I built one some many years ago by plying two thin strips of wood. One of side grain and one of long grain. Roy Underhill wrote about using a thin branch from lower on a pine tree. Seems there is more wood below the center heart than above. When nailed to the side of the barn it would curve up and down with the humidity.

I'll be darned, Lenn. Is there a way you can calibrate them?
Snow might be coming. Saw a lot of fresh stuff yesterday as my American Airlines flight from Portland to Dallas cut diagonally across Utah. Some rugged, gorgeous country.

Thanks Bill, yep ya can turn the nut on the top of the one the other one ya loosen the tooth pick that holds the hair and change the length . Waiting for them to dry out now then will set them, humidity doesn`t change much in the house in the winter.

I was in the wood shop and happened to notice a hygrometer that we had discussed a couple months ago. It is made with two very thin strips of wood with the long grain on the left and the grain running side to side on the right. Today is a rainy day and the humidity is up so the strip of wood is curving back up towards the left because the Grain on the right half is expanding more. When it is dry the stick can curve down as far as the pencil lines show.

They sell those to all the summercaters or flatlanders (aka "tourists") here in Maine each summah, ayuh; and we used to make them with/for the kids in Cub Scouts too. Very easy to do, and while they don't predict the change, they do move with the humidity.

Pitchy, I believe the biggest reason I log in here is to see the latest things you have made. I've enjoyed your posts over the years. I'm not sure which I enjoyed most but the board track racer from a bicycle is near the top.

Years ago and when I had never heard of them I bought one of those "weather forecasting" branches, Sportsman's Guide I think, and nailed it to my cabin at the range. It surprised me how much that twig would move up or down before it finally dried out and broke. I guess I ought to make a replacement, would white pine work?
