Nice. I am not from whitetail country and continue to marvel at the opportunities to collect venison at reasonable ranges that are enjoyed by Americans east of the Mississippi. Here, these wonderful old 19th-century American cartridges have not lost their shine.

Within their limits, there is no way that those old cartridges are any less effective than they were back when they were new. Physics is still the same. The fun might even be better now.

That a Great read Thank You. I'd love to use my 44-40 deer hunting but in Ohio we are permitted to use any straight walled cartridge like the 45-70 or bigger, but the 44-40 is just too powerful ....... :? .

I shoot red deer with my .44-40's with black powder, and the soft lead bullets all exit on these animals. One stopped in the spine neck bones once but that was all.
