Chasing the 44-40

Post by Bryan Austin »

I know I have unloaded on posts recently but after being cooped up for nearly a year, it has been so much fun to be able to get back out to the Range. Even with the high costs, I have enough stock left to shoot a little more. I did have to get some powder and I managed to get some primers from the pops-n-law for $32 for 1,000 !!!!!!

Anyhow, today I chased down some POA's for 25, 50, 100 and 265 yards using the 6x Malcom scope on the Uberti Winchester 73'. With a few minor POA adjustments, I think I got this! Scope is zeroed in at 200 yards for the placements I want. What little error you see is certainly because of my lack of marksmanship rather than the cartridge or firearm.

I forget who on here says, aim small miss small, Missing a golf at 265 yards applies to that. Thanks fer posting these videos. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Very well done.

Now - try this - load the same bullet with 6 grains of H4227 as a priming and then 32 grains of 3F black powder over the top of it. Seat your bullet to the cannelure as you would normally (and it will be compressing the powder about 0.2 inch) and give it a light crimp.
I don't know what alloy you are using, but if the bullet is too soft to compress the powder when you are seating it, you will have to use unsized brass, and then pre compress the powder load with a jacketed bullet, then pull it out and replace with your lead bullet, and a light crimp.

(Or, just use a jacketed bullet with the same load. Hornady 200g XTP for example.)

Now shoot that at 100 and 200 yards.
Trust me.

Wonderful thread. It is a privilege to see Bryan and Carlsen posting together, two men who probably know more about the .44 WCF than any.

I have some loaded up like that but with RL7. Have yet to shoot them. So many projects, so little time!!! I do have IMR-4227. If I can remember, I will take them with me next trip. I am going to attempt to chronograph my loads at 265 yards without killing the chronograph...I have an idea.

That's plenty for killing a deer or hog with good placement.

Sorry I have been off with a broken wrist - happened at the range too! One day I will come back to America and go hunting again. It should be a .44/40 levergun hunt of course...but it would be good to meet some of you guys.
