BC/ AD to BCE when did that happen?

Post by J Miller »

When I was growing up, things that happened before Christ were labeled BC. Things that came after Christ were labeled AD.

Now more often I see CE and BCE. What does this really mean, and when did it come about, and who did it?
I don't like it, maybe cos I don't understand it.

And Google is not my friend, I'm horrible at searches.

I love Google...

BCE (Before Common Era) and BC (Before Christ) mean the same thing- previous to year 1 CE (Common Era). This is the same as the year AD 1 (Anno Domini); the latter means “in the year of the lord,” often translated as “in the year of our lord.”

I'm guessing that Christians haven't gone to that. PC has really changed up the vocabulary.

It is a secular attempt to eliminate Jesus from the dating system using similar letters. What made the era common? No good answer.

Blaine,

Thanks for looking it up for me.

I knew I didn't like this CE / BCE now I know why. I'll stick with BC / AD .

I use BC and AD, as do my kids. But I fear that the generation after theirs will be totally PC and thus ignorant of all that went before. Which brings up the old saying, "those that fail to learn from history are bound to repeat it."

Hmmm. How does the PC police designate a reason for "Year 1"? Do they hope no one will connect Year 1 with Jesus? Are they hoping no one will notice and just take it for granted Year 1 is an arbitrary starting point?

Let us remember that Jesus was not born in the year 1 AD - he was born around 4 - 6 BC. This is why history professors and archaeologists, for whom dates are important, don't use BC/ AD anymore.

Its how archaeologists tell time. Before Common Era has been in use for long time, but is coming into common usage simply because more people I suppose are educated about what was previously just the domain of history professors and carbon dating lab technicians.

It's hardly new:

"In the 17th century the term "vulgar era" first appears as a replacement for Anno Domini in the writings of the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571-1630 CE). At this time "vulgar" did not mean "uncouth" but "common" or "ordinary" and was used to designate events previously noted as "in the year of the Lord" or, simply, the present era. The phrase "vulgar era" was then used by writers interchangeably with "after the time of Christ" or "in the common era" which eventually came to be written simply as "common era" and then CE which gave rise to BCE in defining events prior to the common era. The first use of "common era" in English dates to the 1708 publication of The History of the Works of the Learned or An Impartial Account of Books Lately Printed in all Parts of Europe with a Particular Relation of the State of Learning in Each Country printed for one H. Rhodes in London. The phrase appears in a sentence from page 513 which mentions "the fourth century of the common era"."
