I bumped into these lists and thought it might be interesting:

Interesting but I don't agree with either list at all.

Agreed. They might be confusing popular with good.

:) Those old "B" movies he made in the thirties were a real hoot. Did you know that Yakima Knute taught The Duke everything he knew about being a cowboy? Yakima was the Real Deal, and might have been the start John Wayne was, but just didn't have the voice or presence.

Some of those aren't even westerns! (And what are Australian period films doing in there?)
The order seems totally random. ITs like it was compiled by someone who hadn;t actually watched most of them. (Which wouldnt surprise me looking at the young woman who made it)

I picked up a John Wayne magazine in Lowes last year that ranked all of his movies (their favorite was "Rio Bravo"). In all, I think they were fairly accurate, but movies, like food, can be an issue of individual taste when you get to the nitty-bitty details.

My favorite Duke movie is "Big Jake". But that's just me. Others are entitled to their opinions. I'm sure somewhere out there, in the almost 8 billion people on the planet, someone thinks "The Conqueror" was his finest movie. Stranger things have happened!

I'm with you, Kid, Big Jake is my all time favorite. I wouldn't have rated most of his later films nearly as far down either. I'm sure "Green Beret" got bumped down because much of Hollywood considered it "propaganda".

I'm going to have to track down some of those B's from the 30's. It seemed like by the 40's the quality of his co-stars and leading ladies improved considerably. Had to laugh when I saw Shemp Howard was in one of them. Wonder what kind of careers the Howard brothers might have had if they hadn't doubled down on comedy. Not saying their careers were shabby by any means, but they all had acting abilities that were pretty universal.

I have always thought "The Searchers" was the best movie he made, I saw it when it came out.
