Looks like that needs to shoot a duck or two and some turkeys!

The waterfowl thing is left for my maternal grandfathers old W&C Scott hammerless circa 1881 10 gauge . I have plans to hammer a Canada and a pair of mallards . Those would be my first waterfowl and plenty for me .Marlin32 wrote:Looks like that needs to shoot a duck or two and some turkeys!

Wanna do the gobbler thing also with the W&C . This gun seems to be choked IC and a very light M so I "suspect" it should be very decent with my handloaded buckshot in 000 , 00 , 0 or 1 .

6pt is there some goose hunting available out your way? We are lousy with em on the coast around Wharton, but it has been years since I went. That 10 looks like it make em fall down out of respect.

Also a good many more mallards and wood ducks then most people would think in this area .

Chop the barrels to 18" --- it would make a neat coach gun

Thanks for the idea , but F NOStreetstar wrote:Chop the barrels to 18" --- it would make a neat coach gun
This thing has what appears to be a rather nice set of Damascus 32" uncut barrels that gauge about IC/M .
I'm getting ready to leave for the Blackwater NWR in about an hour for the muzzle loader hunt . If I can get this one doing well with 0 , 00 or 000 buckshot I plan on taking it back to the Blackwater for the shotgun hunt in early December .

I haven't said it earlier in this post but I'm not exactly blown away by visible hammer guns although I do have three others . This Parker however , after fondling it for an hour or so kinda grew on me . Engraving never hurts either

Shooooooooottt, I'd be loading that bad boy up for Cowboy Action Shooting. That way I could shoot it every weekend.

Nothing wrong with it or those that enjoy it , but it has never appealed to me .
To be honest I don't wanna do anything in the shooting realm that would invariably cause me to be somewhere almost every weekend to compete .

It "appears" a Circa 1891 Parker GH 12 gauge damascus gun may be falling into my lap from the same place as the Parker hammer 10 gauge . This one has 28" uncut barrels that seem to be choked IC and a very very light M .

Got the Parker GH 12 gauge from the same party as the 10 gauge today .
Should be able to bring them both home Saturday or Monday at the latest .

I've said it before and I'll say it again I prefer hammerless side by sides , however this one has me thinking I'd like a matching 12 gauge and perhaps a 16 !
Took this one out the backdoor today with two of my handloads with #4 shot and tried one in each barrel !
No problems !

If I can get some relief by Wednesday this bad boy will head to the range and be patterned with several different sizes of handloaded buckshot !

Got to the range this afternoon .
I wanted to recheck both my Knight Disc Rifles but there were to many people at the benches . So I went over to the pattern board to shoot this old Parker Hammer gun !
Tried it with handloaded 000 , 00 , 1 and 3 buck . Bear in mind this gun is IC/M . Anyway all four sizes patterned great . After checking each barrel with each size I then shot right and left with 000 then checked and repeated the process with the other three sizes . They all made very nice right/left patterns !
Last year when I was messing with my LC Smith Quality 2 10 gauge I got very similar results . The Smith is choked M/M .

I wanna go out Thursday or Friday morning to check the two Disc Rifles before the ML opener Saturday . So I might see tomorrow if I can get some 0 Buck loaded to try in this old Parker as well .

10 gauge...that really means "HOME PROTECTION"... :)
Re: Parker Grade 2 hammer 10 gauge circa 1884
After shooting it yesterday I wanted to load some 0 Buck loads . With my REM SP-10 wad I wanted to try 12 and 16 pellets . However only 12 fit . So I loaded 4 rounds with 12 pellets and no buffer and 4 rounds with 12 pellets and shot buffer . My plan is to hit the range in the early Thursday AM and try these one the pattern board . Also wanna fire my two Knight Disc Rifles as I wasn't able to get to a bench yesterday .

I don't think any of the 10's I have would be that great for home defense except maybe as a last resort . The shortest barrel on any of the ones I have is 30" and of course I wouldn't dare cut any of them.
They had an old LC Smith Quality 2 10 gauge on GB a few months back that had been cut to 20" I think . I had thoughts of getting that one and making a buckshot exclusively gun out of it , but the guy who had it for sale thought a lot more of it then I did !

Patterns with handloaded 0 Buck today at 25 yards .
First off unbuffered handloads . One shot the right barrel , one shot the left barrel and one target with shots from both barrels .
And the same with 6 9mm cases full of buffer added .
Obviousely the buffered handloads are the way to go !

Re: Parker Grade 2 hammer 10 gauge circa 1884 BLOODED
Today was the first day of the gun season here in VA !
Saw a couple bucks this AM but was unable to get a decent shot .
Went out this afternoon and carried my Remington 700BDL 6.5-06 as well as the old Parker Grade 2 hammer 10 gauge just like I had in the AM !
Long about 16:30 I had what I thought was a pair of doe come up to about 30 hyards and stop . Then the smaller came closer and I dropped it with the right barrel then swiveled and shot the larger one with the left barrel . The first made it about 15 yards and the second was DRT ! Handloaded 0 Buck 12 pellets and 30 grains SR7625 in a REM SP-10 wad and 6 9mm cases full of Winchesater Grex buffer with the shot .
Had a number of firsts on this day !
First deer killed with the Parker Grade 2 hammer 10 gauge .
First time I killed two deer on the rise so to speak with a shotgun shooting buckshot .
First piebald doe I ever killed .
The larger one incidently is the piebald doe and the smaller one turned out to be a button buck .

This year is the first year we can hunt on sundays on private property. So far I've not taken advantage of it during the archery or ML season , but I may very give it a go in the morning .rjohns94 wrote:Awesome

I'm gonna have to get a roundball mold that will work inside the REM SP-10 wads and use it in this gun and my circa 1890 LC Smith Quality 2 10 gauge .
Might even try it patched in my MacFarlane 10 gauge muzzle loader

I think Track of the Wolf has exactly what I need for this gun and the roundball it makes equates roughly into 1 1/2 ounces so thats okay by my load standards for the gun .

And patched fairly well this roundball "should" work in my 10 gauge ML !

Well no such luck on acquiring the Grade 3 Parker 10 gauge hammergun with the heavier #4 frame . I went about $100 over what I thought a realistic value was and I didn't get it !
Lost out by $5 , but on any internet auction the other person may have been well higher then that .
This gun had some issues , the frame had one seriel number while the forend and barrels had the same yet different from the action . The stock wrist needed extensive repair and old blueing needed to be removed from the entire gun as well as the right hammer needing some engraving to make it correct for the grade .

Re: Parker Grade 2 hammer 10 gauge circa 1884 BLOODED
May very well have a Parker Grade 1 top lever hammer 10 gauge coming that needs a fair amount of work . Dunno about it yet as far as purchasing . Stock is cracked pretty bad in the wrist , the guns off face and the left hammers been replaced . On the good side it's all there except for the original left hand hammer and it already has a Parker letter saying blah blah blah is correct etc etc .
The cracked stock I can deal with , the off face and any loosening of the action I can deal with relatively easy . The replaced left hammer however is another matter . Oh yeah I almost forgot the barrels don't ring but nothing is rattle loose . The barrels to fix if they need to be resoldered would not be cheap . That is the main problem I am still apprehensive about .
