Colt New Frontier ????

Post by ollogger »

All the problems ive had stuffing a cartridge in the cylinder of the Colt has boiled down
to the star not being milled enough to let a round in, 3 cyl. work good & 3 hang up
A trip to Colt would fix the problem I am sure, but am reluctant to do that ( it should have left the factory working) so being pig headed I sized two 44 mags checked them out loaded them & shot
them every thing worked as it should, so im looking for some feed back on this
any one ever here of using 44 mag brass this way?

I did try all sorts different brass in the cly. including 38-40 with same results, sometimes if you
rotated the brass it would drop in, the brass was new or sized or factory ammo

sorry guys the gun is a 44-40

Could just be me but I can't help feeling I'm missing something here. Is the gun chambered for .44 Mag or?

Pics??? Had a Colt 44 Spl. That would not let fired cases eject. Had to relieve the loading gate clearance and reblue the CCH.

Looks like it might even be a better solution, 44-40 brass being a source of complaint.

What does the fired brass look like? I imagine it's bulged to almost the diameter of the rim. I'd still send it to Colt; at least give 'em the opportunity to make it right. I gotta admit, I thought the brass thickness at the mouth woulda made chambering that brass difficult.

P.S.: I still think the brass is out of spec.

Of course the mag brass is shorter not reaching the full 44-40 taper.

Pig headed or not, my suggestion is to send it back to Colt and have them make it right.

I bought a new, unfired SAA in 44-40 some time ago and it had a problem with the chambers of the cylinder that required I send it back to Colt. Was only gone about 3 weeks and came back with a new cylinder, hand and bolt. Works fine now. No charge!
Yes, it was their fault for not even firing it before it left the factory but they did make it right. It was from the custom shop and has ivory grips which did not send back to them.
My 2 cents is to give Colt a chance to make it right but call them first for the address and shipping instructions. Seems I remember the address does not mention Colt or firearms.

Brad,
I just dug out a 44-40 cylinder and envisioned what your issue is. If three will work and three will not, it really has to be close....real close. To me, it's not worth the aggravation of sending it back as that is a minor issue.

Get yourself a magnifying glass and try dropping in a round and watch real close where the hang up is. My guess is that there is a minor ridge on the end where it's dished out.

I'm sure you can make a makeshift tool of some sort that you can chuck in a drill press. Even the end of a half moon file would take that out. Sandpaper wrapped around the eraser end of a pencil. Your a smart guy, you can do it.----6

Ollogger,
I have a Clymer 44-40 reamer that has the rim clearance step on it. I can loan it to you. I had to clean up a cylinder with it just a week or so ago. Same problem as you describe and mine needed to let them seat a little deeper too. Just use lots of cutting oil and turn it by hand.
PM me if you want to borrow.
