Pigs Are Flying!

Post by don Tomás »

To my LEO buddies, I think I just saw a pig fly past the house. Always wanted to serve on a jury, but knew I would never be selected due to my retired LEO status. Well, I was selected last week and the case was finally decided this afternoon. The case? 187PC (Ca. Penal Code - murder/homicide). D.A. wanted 1st Degree, we gave him Voluntary Manslaughter. Ain't that something???

Defense didn't budget their strikes well, huh?
Everytime I'm in the pool I get asked LOTS of questions. I'm going to be stricken, but it educates the other potential jurors to the actual statutes.

Oh, I got lots of questions during the selection process. I even admitted that all things being equal, I was hard-wired to be prejudiced towards the prosecution rather than the defense. Pretty sure the defense didn't exclude me because it was such a lousy case and they were counting that someone would see that the elements for a 1st or 2nd degree conviction just weren't there.

I keep getting called up for jury duty, but never selected. Right now I'm on standby until the middle of November.

I get called all the time. Report date is usualy at least 4 days before I get home. I call, explain, and they say, "maybe next time." My wife, who's home all the time, has never been called... sometimes I think of volunteering her...

I usually would get tossed off juries right away as well. Finally got picked for one almost 20 years ago, and ended up being the foreman. It was a fascinating experience!

Used to get bothered every year. But, only actually served on two juries.

Sadly a few years ago a young lady I knew was murdered. After she had the restraining order and call the cops to say her ex was coming over to kill her. Next time I was on jury duty I let the DA and judge know what I thought of the legal (we do not have a system that has anything to do with justice) system. Ain't been contacted since.

I've always wondered if they have lists of folks who's companies pay regardless of the length of jury service, and of folks they just don't want around.
