Help finding Remington 81 sight and troubleshooting ejection

Post by Pitchy »

Say fellers i`m having a hard time finding info about sights for a Remington 81.
Didn`t they make a peep sight that mounted on the left side of the receiver like the ones for a Win. 95?
They were a long flat contraption that had a lever on it and you could move it up or down.
Thanks.

I had no idea either until i seen one on ebay a minute ago so thought i`d try one of the ones i have.
The clip even has a little bump on the side that stops it from going down to far.

Redfield's 102N was a side mount for the model 8 and 81. There's a lyman tang site on ebay now but it looks like several folks are interested (item no. 310433580977). Good luck!

Thanks, i`m watching that one.

Are there any 81 smiths on board i`m having some extraction problems.
Ejects fine when firing the gun but when ya work the action by hand to unload it pulls the shell out of the chamber and drops it on the magazine.
Been studying this thing for hours and the only thing i can see is the flat bar in the groove on top of the bolt which i take is the extractor spring is wore down quite a bit.
Could there not be enough pressure on the case to hold it in the recess in the bolt.
I read that ya can bend it in the middle to put more pressure on it. Do ya have to disasemble the gun to fix that.
The ejector plunger and spring seem fine, is the ejector plunger supposed to stick out all the time?
I can push it in and it has good tension.
Thanks

Ok, i have the gun stripped down and the bolt out but can`t figure out how to remove the extractor.
I can see now that is the problem, if i can get it off and bend it a little i think the problem would be solved.

I learned alot about the action, big difference in what happens between hand cycling and firing the gun.
When firing the barrel looks up with the barrel by the plunger rotating. The barrel and slide travel full rear then because of the different spring tensions the barrel moves forward pulling the case from the barrel and ejecting it.
Then the slide follows along stripping a new round and reloading the rifle.
When the barrel moves forward it pulles the plunger forward and unlocks it.
Great gun.

Yes I know what you mean about the bolt rotating and locking into the barrel ,then

the bolt releases as the barrel goes back ,then the barrell travels forward and the bolt

then moves forward and strips a round and locks up again. I enjoyed your vidio and

I just bought a mod 81 (1948) haven't shot it yet but that will get done after the rain.

I guess you fiqured out that the 35 only hold 4 rounds, really enjoy ALL your posts and

pictures of anything you do. You are the man.

Yep, 5 rounds. I never tried any other clips in my .35, it would be convenient. My gun has a Lyman side-mounted receiver sight. I like the gun all the more because it has been in the family since it was first sold and has been hunted quite a bit.

What I was reporting was from Rem 8 web site, and they say all the lesser cal 8's hold

five in the mag and one in the pipe. And that the 35cals only hold 4 in the mag,I was

hopeing you were right but I couldn't for the life of me push that fith round down hard

enough to slide the bolt past it without stripping off a round . So I say mine holds 4 rounds

and one in the pipe. My mag spring may need some looking at if your's hold 5.

any help would be appreciated. Bob

Mine holds five in the mag, if ya close the bolt it loads the gun as it`s supposed too.
I don`t think the gun is designed to be able to put five rounds in the mag only and close the bolt on an empty chamber.
In that case only four rounds can be placed in the mag so you can push them down so the bolt passes over them allowing for a empty chamber .
Don`t think the gun is designed to be used that way but i could be wrong.

There was a fellow in Michigan years ago that would convert the 6 and 81 to a removable clip type gun... To find those, thats rare.

While I haven't put all that many rounds through it, thus far the only malfunction I've had with it was two years ago when I gave this poor fellow the bad news. I'd put 5 in the mag, pushed them down and closed the bolt on a 6th round. Afterwards when I thought about it, and why it choked, I realized I'd never actually fired the gun loaded that way up till that point. So who knows. To be fair, I haven't tried to replicate it either. After that I just loaded 4+1.

Been having trouble with the last shot hold open , found out from a guy on the Rem board that i`d missed putting the ear on the flat spring in its proper slot.
Took it apart and installed it right but after trying it today it missed on the second batch.
I`m thinking i should of bent that spring as to add a little more pressure on the hold open arm.
So looks like it is take down time again, i`m getting to know this guns innards real good. :)

Your welcome pard, that 35 packs a punch, first hit on the gong broke it
Punched a hole through the pipe that it swings on and into the shaft inside it.
It took one swing and stuck to the rear .
Stripped it down just now and tweeked the hold open spring a little, will try it again tomorrow.

First, talk about agrivation and hope ya all appreciate these videos.
It took five hours and fifteen minutes to download this video.
I`m paying for WI-FI from the neaghbor and it can really vary.
Ok the problem with the hold open, because i`m getting to be an old fanny burp and can`t see very good i missed the slight round over of the hold open notch in the slide.
After getting out the magnify gleass i caught it and took the slide to the vise and filed it to a flat edge again along with flatening the end of the hold open arm.
Foregive my wrong use of the names for these parts.
Also i am not recomending anyone preform these actions to their guns, it`s just what i did to mine.
Always consult a gunsmith first, to bad a person has to say such things but that`s the way it is.
Anyway that was the problem and as you see by the video was the fix.
Took a while to get er done but as they say persistance pays off. :D

These 220`s are doing so good i think i`ll stick with them, only missed twice at that gong off hand at 100 yards.
Primmer pockets are big crators, no signs of excessive pressure.
The 81 is now a good rifle, took some time and a learning lesson.

Man, that brings back some memories. I had an 81 in 35 back in the early 80s. I was loading pointed 150gr bullets for it and it worked quite well on deer. My only problem with it was the occasional hot brass going down the back of my neck if I wasn't wearing a hat with a brim. I sold off most of my guns when I went back in the Navy and it was one of the ones that went. But it was one heck of a rifle.

BTW, Frank Hamer used his 35 Remington in the Bonnie and Clyde ambush. He swore by his.
