Gun Painting How To for YK ( warning lots of pics) update

Post by JReed »

Ysable had asked my how I went about painting my guns. I had posted some pics for him but promised a more indepth step by step so here goes.

Preparation goes along way when painting I start by masking off every thing that I dont want paint on. I like the blue masking tape but any color works fine.
Image

Also I rolled up some toilet paper as a plug for the muzzle. The first few bullets down the bore should blow out any paint over spray in the bore but why mess around right.
Image

Once every thing was masked off It was time to clean the gun. I used rubbing alcohol soaked paper towel and wiped the entire gun this removes any dirt, gun oil, and hand oils that are on it so the paint will stick. (note: I wear latex gloves after I get it clean to keep hand oils off of it)

Now that the gun is clean it is time to lay every thing out.
Image

For this paint job I only used 3 colors of Krylon Fusion cammo paint Tan, Brown, and green. The sponge I will be using to create the pattern I am trying out this time. But first you have to get the base color down I used the tan as my base. I gave it 2 coats to get good even coverage. I allowed 15 minuets between coats on each side so dont get in a hurry give it the 15 min.(note: If this is the first time you are painting the gun it may take more coats to get a good base)
Image

Now down to the nitty gritty of making the pattern. For this I took the brown and the green. I sprayed each into some containers I made out of tin foil ( paper plates or bowls would work fine I just didn't have any on hand) and dipped the sponges into the paint and dabbed the paint on. ( I made a special stencil for this one  )
Image
I kept alternating colors until I was happy. You can over do it with this pattern at the same time to little looks dumb but it really is personal taste in the end.

Here are some pics of my paint ball gear that I did over the summer.

I hope some of you found this useful. Now please don't do this to some thing nice like a Sharps.

Jeremy -

Thank you for the detailed instructions. A couple questions for you:

(1) You laid the rifle on one side, painted the base coat, waited 15 minutes, then flipped it over and applied the first base coat to the other side. Waited another 15 minutes, flipped it again, and put the second base coat on the first side. Waited 15 minutes, flipped it, and applied the second base coat to the second side. Right? Did the gun stick at all to your drop cloths?

(2) I'm torn about painted a new scope, even if it isn't overly expensive. Any problems with the turret covers sticking?

(3) Do you mask over the serial number so it can still be easily read?

(4) Looks like you did this in your garage. Is it heated? How cold was it when you painted the gun?

Very cool job. I especially like the template!!! 8)

Nicely done Gunny!

Yes I painted one coat on one side waited then flipped it over for the other side waited and then did it all over again. Krylon states on the can that it has a 15 minute dry time. I have found that this is true. No I didn't have any problems with it sticking to the cloth If you want you can hang it from a sling swivel and paint it that way.

(2) I'm torn about painted a new scope, even if it isn't overly expensive. Any problems with the turret covers sticking?

Surprisingly they didn't stick much at all. They just required a bit more hand strength to pop them loose but nothing to crazy. If you are concerned mask them off with tape and you are good to go.

(3) Do you mask over the serial number so it can still be easily read?

No I don't if you are laying down 20 coats maybe. I have painted this gun twice now one paint job on top of the other and all the markings are visible figure about 6 coats of paint on it.

(4) Looks like you did this in your garage. Is it heated? How cold was it when you painted the gun?

  I wish I had a garage. I did it in my basement and stunk up the whole house made me real popular with the wife. My basement is a constant 55 degrees.

Very cool job. I especially like the template!!! 8)
I am glad you like it :D

Just a thought, YK. Ask 2 if he likes the stencil idea that JReed used. If so, then maybe a suggestion of the BSA emblem for First Class.

Jeremy,
That looks very professional! I learned something new today as I never would have thought of the sponge. (only sponges around here are a few of my in-laws :D )

Thanks for posting that. No Sharps or Winchesters will get that treatment but a Mossberg 20 ga. bolt action might. :D -----------Sixgun

Just another tip: a foam earplug works awesome for plugging the barrel. Nothin wrong with newspaper, but I found a rag didn't work well.

Sixgun you need the decorator type sponges you find in the paint isle at Wally World the ones with the big holes.

Nice job, Jeremy. SWMBO of my house allows me to do a lot of things most others wouldn't, but using spray paint would definitely be a no no.

Re: Gun Painting How To for YK ( warning lots of pics) update

Post by JReed »

Ok did some playing around the past couple of weeks with my Stevens 200. The mods I did to the gun required a new paint job so here is how I did the latest one.

I prepped the gun as before.

I started by painting the gun with 2 coats of tan to start with.
Image

While it was drying I laid out some painters tape on a sheet of waxed paper so I could make stencils for the pattern I was doing this time.
Image

After I let it dry a bit I applied my stencils to the gun.
Image

Then I took the gun back out side and painted the whole rifle with the brown (sorry forgot to take pics of this). Once that had dried for a while I applied the rest of the stencils over the brown and then painted the rifle with the OD green.
Image

I let this dry for a couple hours then I carefully pealed off my tape stencils To reveal the pattern.
Image
Image
You can see here I have some touch up to do.

I think it came out well. After it has dried over night I will go over it with mat clear to protect it.

Matte clear coat. I use the stuff made by Krylon called Matte Finish.

Is it signifiicantly stronger than their regular paint? I wondered if it was like the automotive 'Clear Coat' stuff.

Yes it dries to a much harder protective coating then the camo paint. I do 3 coats then give it a light rub with 0000 steel wool to knock down the shine. I found the paint holds up much better when you are bumping around in the bush.

Been waiting for a suitable rifle to use the suggestions from Gunny and Y2K. I traded into a .375 H&H with a synthetic stock and I'm thinking this is the one. probably going with 4 colors - light tan, brown, green and black. I have a leupold scope on it and not sure I want to paint it. Questions are, will the paint adhere to the synthetic stock? and does the matte clear put an extra layer of protection on it? unsure if I will use a leave, sponge or stripe pattern.

The Krylon Fusion paint will stick like glue and yes the clear just adds a bit of scratch and chip protection. Also because it is an acrylic the clear will protect the paint from cleaners some.

Thanks for the tip on the matte clear coat. I will have to do that. Should have thought about it earlier, because I did do this with my daughter's pink-stocked rifle. Great idea! :D

No it didn't stick the bolt body did drag a bit and working the action eventually rubbed the paint off the bolt at the contact points. I have fired about 250 rounds thru it since painting with no malfunctions or difficulties.

Thanks Bob.
