How much does your lever open?

Post by 86er »

Well maybe I should have asked "how much does it travel"? , but I didn't wan't to creat a first impression that I was wondering how often your rifle goes on vacation.

Please take a moment to list your Make and Model rifle and say whether the lever moves: less than 90 Degrees, 90 degrees or more than 90 degrees.

Any other comment regarding the amount a lever travels is very welcome.

Thanks

As best as I can tell without an angle measureing tool here is what I got:

Winchester 9422 = Less than 90°
Winchester 94AE Trapper .45 Colt = Right at 90°
Marlin 1894 CB Limited .45 Colt = Right at 90°
Winchester 94 1950 vintage 30-30 = More than 90°
Winchester 94 1980 Trapper 30-30 = More than 90°

Two Winchester 94s 1950 vintage .30-30 = Just past 90º

Now this one is interesting:

One Winchester 94AE made in 2005 .30-30. Has/had the rebounding hammer and tang safety.

New out of the box with rebounding hammer and tang safety, the lever when opened at full stroke was just at 90º

After installing the pre-safety parts (rebounding hammer and tang safety) to convert it to ½-cock-safety, the lever when opened at full stroke is just past 90º

I know all the 1894's in 44 Mag our family has had were the same, but I don't know if they were the same as my old .357 1894 - I'll compare them when I get them out next.

I do know that the first "336" I ever had was an 1895 Cowboy Marlin, and that lever throw seemed like it would dislocate your shoulder when I first used it! I think the other 336's (35 Rem, 444 Marlin) are about the same.

My little Ruger 96/22 is a very short lever throw - your thumb never needs to leave the grip top.

I measured the 'angle' as the degrees lever travels from original position - I figured the angle vs. barrel or action wouldn't relate as much as to what your hand actually has to do.

Puma 92's (.357, 44, 45) - 70 degrees (the .454 Casull seemed to be 74 degrees - unsure if it's 'supposed' to be more)

Marlin 1894's (.32-20, .357, .44) - 72 degrees (I couldn't see difference between them)

Marlin 336's (.35 Rem, .444, .45-70) - 82 degrees (I couldn't see difference between them)

Ruger 96's (.22LR, .44 Magnum) - 54 degrees (I knew that's what I liked about them...! 8) )

There may be subtle chambering-differences within action types I didn't pick up on, but kinda gives some comparisons.

Marlin 1894 is "stock" configuration is as above. SASS actually has a prescribed method for measuring lever throw:

"With the action closed, measure three inches back from the back edge of the trigger at the point where it enters the frame. Mark this point on both the bottom of the buttstock and the lever opposite the buttstock mark. Open the lever to its maximum extension and measure the distance between the two marks."

Using the quoted SASS method, a stock marlin opens 6". Mine are short sroked (requires extensive modification and use of short ammo) so that they open 4 5/8". Put another way, if ya take yer marlin and open the lever until the nub on the bottom of the bolt JUST cocks the hammer with no overtravel, and stop right there, that's where mine are when fully open. It's a whole bunch less than stock.

All Winchester levers open somewhat in excess of 90º. They are extremely smooth, regardless of lever opening distances. I don't bother with SASS or CAS, or any rapid fire shooting organization, so the question is moot to me. Does a 90º lever throw impede hunting? Nah. :P
