Totally, weirdly OT... Gupta?

Post by Old Ironsights »

Maybe it's just me, but have you ever met/heard of a Gupta that WASN'T a Doctor/Surgeon?

I'm beginning to wonder if "Gupta" is more of a Caste Designation than a "real" name.

I mean, I can't think of a single modern "western" name that has as much immediate connection with a line of work than Gupta seemsto with Medicine.

(Yah, back in te day, "Mike Baker" made bread, "Bill Wright" made wheels, "Frank Cooper" made barrels and "Joe Smith" made horseshoes & knives... but that really doesn't apply any more...)

I saw an old Black & White movie about India "North West Frontier" and a guy named Gupta was an engine driver.

I know that at one point "Gupta" was a dynasty in India... kind of like "Ming" in China, but in the post Colonial era...???

Some years back in Phoenix my mother had a doctor named Gupta. He was from India if my memory serves me correct.

I agree, it must be the biggest family in India, and they all came here. Or some sort of caste or carrier designation.

Of course, she's not exactly in the US or Britian is she?

It would be like 90% of "Martinez"s outside of Mexico being Pastry Chefs or somthing...

I used to have Gupta's in a freshwater tank back in middle-school and none of them ever looked like that. Maybe I should have fed them more or not put that Oscar in the tank with them.

Yeah, but Singh is more like "Smith"... haven't seen as many Singhs tied to a single profession as much as I have Guptas...

My Google-fu tells me:
"GUPTA" - Derived from "goptri," meaning military governor, ruler, or protector.
The Gupta Dynasty, of India, dates from 240 - 280 AD.
