405 bolt
What mauser or other rifle would be best to build a 405 bolt on. Love my levers but was wondering how to go about this project

Re: 405 bolt
Had a friend that converted a Krag-Jorgenson 30-40 to 405. Took a lot of work (removal of metaal) in the magazine area and magazine feed port with a dremel tool as the front of the 405 takes up a lot more room than a 30-40. IMO, the Krag's strength is right at the limits with the 405 but it did work slick. There's always the Siamese mauser action that is meant for rimmed cases.
Re: 405 bolt
I think if you could find a long magazine Lee Enfield, it might work.
Re: 405 bolt
Ive seen British enfields rebored to 405. danny
Re: 405 bolt
Yep I would say find a N04 Mk1 Enfield with a shot out barrel and go for it. This is the same gun Navy Arms IIRC had rebarreled to 45-70. What is the rim diameter of the 405? The Brit rim diameter is .540 is it is close it should work without much fuss.

Re: 405 bolt
The brit rim diameter is close enough, problem is going to be the length of the 405 cartridge, you need clearance in the magazine for 3.25 inches or more would be better.
Re: 405 bolt
I will have to measure my mag later and post back what I find out tomorrow evening. I think it may work in the enfield mag it would be the feed ramp that might be an issue.

Re: 405 bolt
Well one thing about it feed ramps and mag followers are grindable.
I've often thought about having a Lee turned into a 405, and maybe even getting one done in a 35 winchester, but never know enough about them to know if the magazine would be long enough.

Re: 405 bolt
Well I know they are long enough for 45-70 with 500gr pills. The load that I make up for my .303 is a COAL of 3.11" and it loads with no problems with room left over in the mag. I think it just might work. I dont think it would be any thing a Dremel couldnt fix.

Re: 405 bolt
If your 303's are 3.11" COAL then the 405 should work in there too. A factory loaded Hornady 405 measures just a hair less.

Jimw;
If you locate a readily available, affordable bolt action that can haddle the .405 with the 400 grain Hornady and you might just start a fad!
You could shoot the .41 mag pistol bullets for medium game, the 300 for bigger stuff and the 400 DGX/DGS for big mean stuff!
Good luck with it and have fun!

Re: 405 bolt
A Pattern 14 Enfield (303 as opposed to the 1917 in 30-06)would be a interesting redo to 405 from the pressure stand point. A lot of room for reload experimentation. Also the one piece stock and flush mag floor plate.Remember the Hannibal A-Square rifle.

Re: 405 bolt
Hey thanks for all the replies. Is something I would love to do, Wasn't sure how to go about it thanks for all the ideas
Re: 405 bolt
Rim diameter on the 405 is .543".
Re: 405 bolt
Use to have an Enfield converted to 410, can not remember if it was 3" though

Re: 405 bolt
P14's are pretty hard to find and expensive when you do.
Re: 405 bolt
Sorry it took me so long finaly had a chance to measure the mag on my Enfield the longest loaded round it will take is 3.125 that leaves 2 1,000ths of wiggle room. How long is the .405?

Re: 405 bolt
That would make for an awfully close fit. ,but a bit more would sure be handy.
My 300 gr Northforks measure 3.205, 300 gr Hornady factory 300 gr fp measures 3.19

Re: 405 bolt
It mic'ed out to 3.127 but as I said I wouldnt want to load that long they would stick in the mag.
