OT, Totally. Slugs like cat food.

Post by J Miller »

We have had a variety of critters come up on our porch to eat and drink. We leave a bowl of cat food out and some water for our kitties.
Lately I seen the same huge slug eating the cat food. This slug is beige with brown tiger stripes, about 4" to 5" long, and as big around as my ring finger. Last night I went outside to meet wifie when she came home from work and there was the slug in the food bowl. Down on the bottom he was curled around eating to his hearts content.
Sometime later I saw it about a foot from the food bowl. A big bulge about an inch back from the mouth end. Just laying there like .... I can't believe I ate the whole thing!!!
As sick as I was I got a laugh out of looking at the over full slug.
I know, we need pics. Wifie has the only functional digital camera now, so I didn't get any. Maybe next time.

A friend has tomato plants with some tomato worms. He takes the worms and sets them on the block wall raps it twice and a lizard comes out and takes the worms.

Joe - maybe you could train this slug. :)

I have a picture somewhere of my Dad's cat (now mine) sitting there watching a Bufo toad eat his dry catfood. He also sits there during day the smiling at the doves as they eat his food, he a total pacifist.

OI,

A trained lizzard, that's pretty cool.

My mom used to raise tomatoes and one year the worms about destroyed them. She got a funny look on her face and went to the local feed and seed store and brought home some ducks. We made a pool for them and showed them the tomato patch. In short order, no worms.

I was thinking that since that slug leaves behind a trail of slick goo he would be good for something, but I haven't' figured out what yet. If he gets much bigger I might have to worry about the cats.

Ganjiro,

I remember that pic from the last time you posted it. Neat toad.

I've had this problem with both snails and slugs. Don't usually feed the cat outdoors, but when I do, I sprinkle some salt on the ground aroung the dish. No more snails or slugs. The cat may lick his paws later, but to no detriment of the cat.

When I lived in AZ we had slugs that were maybe an inch long. Sorta icky brown color. Nothing like this big old critter. They don't bother me too much unless I accidentally step on one .... yuck!
Next time I see it I'll post a picture.

There has to be something I can train it to do.

Slugs like beer, too. They'll drown en-masse in it. Good excuse to buy a 6-pack. Put a bowl (I like disposable plastic bowls or the bottoms of 2-liter bottles) in a hole in the ground with the rim at ground level. Fill with beer. Empty each morning.

Yea, but it's more fun to watch them come into contact with the salt.

Have the same problem, they usually only show up in the early summer for us not sure why. In the picture they left the dog bowl and are moving up to the cat bowl via the side of the house.

I think I figured out why it only shows up every two or three days. If I remember right there was a logo on it's side that said U.S.P.S. That might explain a lot.

No, the spirits are in the glass. Do the french eat slugs, or just snails? I prefer fast food.

Where else can we go from leverguns to slugs ........ the eatin kind.

Now lets discuss if they are Conservative or Liberal slugs.
