Winchester 92 25-20 Removing forearm stock

Post by BIGBIRD »

Hello,
I have my grandfathers 92. I'm shipping it to have a liner installed. I have to remove the stock and forearm.
I have some questions about removing of the forearm.
I have removed the shell feeder tube and spring.
I have removed butt stock.
I have removed the (2) screws holding the forearm cap and it's loose. It slides up to the tube band. There's a dove tailed clip that the forearm cap screws attach to. This dovetailed clip prevents the forearm stock from sliding forward enough to remove it.. Once I remove the feeder tube I'll have to punch out this dovetailed clip to slide forearm out.
The feeder tube band has a pin in it, so I assume I'll have to drift punch out the pin to remove feeder tube band so I can then slide out the tube.

This narrative is like a question, "Is this the way to remove the forearm stock?"

Look forward to your advise

Thanks

Yes...remove the screw at front of magazine tube while retaining the cap it holds...then you can remove the tube cap, spring, and mag spring follower. Sounds like you have that all out.

Drift out the band pin usually left to right and the mag-tube should be free to remove...forearm cap too....then can carefully drift the forearm cap retainer out...remove the wood...can rotate the barrel band in it's slot to remove it

The cartridge tube hanger is NOT an ordinary dovetail but rather rotates to remove it. The reliner may not need the hanger removed but again he might.

1) Welcome to the fire !

2) The piece the forend cap screws to is termed the "forend tenon"

3) On my rifles that have a forend cap, after the magazine tube, forend cap & screws are removed, the forend wood can usually be pulled "down" (away from the barrel bottom) a little bit, but enough for the wood to clear the tenon.

4) Once the wood's off, the tenon can either left in place, or removed, as needed.

The mag tube hanger and barrel should be supported. I like to clamp them in a padded vise left side up. The reason this is important is to protect the hanger/barrel twist-in dovetail, particularly if this is a round barrel rifle. Once that hanger gets loose in the dovetail it is really hard to tighten it up again.

Don't remove the hanger if you can avoid it. If you must, mark the front so it goes back the same.

Hello,

Can I please get the serial number and detail photos of the rifle, including the areas of stamped writing, so that I can add it into a research survey which I am working on? I am happy to answer any questions you might have. http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

Thanks

It sounds like your rifle is a sporting rifle configuration since you did not mention a saddle ring or barrel bands on the gun. Is the barrel round or octagon shaped?

While I am clueless as to the barrel profile, since the OP's speaking about removing a forend cap (which was standard for Winchester "rifle" models), I too would presume he doesn't have a Carbine (model).

It has an octagon barrel.
No saddle rings.
Grampa used it on his farm in Wisconsin. I shot many rounds with it, my first gun. All my relatives were farmers. We coon hunted a lot with hounds.
Thanks again everybody!
HAPPY TRAILS!
