Modest 350gr .45-70 loads

Post by Stevie »

I bought some lead 350gr bullets from Buffalo Arms and looking to load some lighter kicking smokeless ammo suitable for both Browning lever and Springfield trapdoor use.

Looking for some 'get started' loads with promise. I've loaded quite a few 405gr(Lee hollow-base mold) with Trail Boss which are fairly mild...and some 300gr jacketed with 3031which are NOT mild(Browning 86 only loads).

Thanx Stevie

I'll post some Lyman loads for the 320 Gould HP when I get the chance. But really, grab an old Lyman Manual and you will have all the info you need...

I saw some promising loads in the Lyman #47 and had some thought towards working with the next heavier bullet data. The Speer manuals I have are all jacketed data and appear rather HOT!

Type in, light loads for 45/70. There is a post that shows a bunch if loads with powders that are from 900-1200fps. Todd

.

My Lyman Cast Bullet handbook lists 45-70 loads using SR-4759 powder as:

293 gr bullet: start: 26.0 gr 1311 fps 9,400 CUP; max 30.0 gr 1602 fps 14,600 CUP

322 gr bullet: start: 19.0 gr 1043 fps 8,100 CUP; max 25.0 gr 1412 fps 16,400 CUP

366 gr bullet: start: 19.0 gr 1035 fps 9,500 CUP; max 23.3 gr 1298 fps 15,400 CUP

420 gr bullet: start 18.0 gr 942 fps 9,000 CUP; max 23.0 gr 1270 fps 15,700 CUP

Again, this is for SR-4759 [NINE] powder, not to be confused with SR-4756 [SIX] powder.

Alternately, .45-70 gallery loads can be made up using black powder and commercial .457" round lead balls.

I used 5 grains of FFFg Holy Black, an over powder wad, two lubed "wonder wads", and a .457" RB seated on the last wad.

The over-powder wads can be eliminated by seating the RB down onto the powder with an appropriately-sized wood dowel.

It should bring 400 fps (+/-) with good accuracy to 50'.

My all time favorite Lyman load is 21gr of 2400 under poly fill (or farina) and the 457122 "Gould" 322 gr HP.

Not quite 1300fps, easy shooting, and uses the powder I have in bulk.
