Got the 1885, 30-40 out to the range today

Post by 2ndovc »

Only had about an hour but it was worth it!

Started out at 50 yards to see where the sights were set. Pretty close with some handloads I had made for my Springfield. A 180 Gr. JRN over 38 grains of IMR 4895 in some new brass. Last three shots went into a 1 1/2 group using the tang sight. It will do far better. The new glasses have helped but they're not perfect. I my eyes changed again from the diabetes thing. It's improving though.

I just got some 220 grain Hornady and 200 gr. LRNGC's that I'm looking forward to trying.
Overall it was a beautiful day to be out with a really cool shooter!

There ya go . I bet that one will love cast bullets at moderate velocity.

I have a Ruger #1 that I built with a Douglas 8mm 30" match barrel chambered in .32-40 with a 1:12" twist. Breach seated NOE 170 gr. Plain based bullets over 14 gr. Of IMR 4227 will consistantly print five shots into 1/2" at 100 yd. those bullets are traveling at right around 1400 fps.
I have a 36X Leupold on it and it is fun, recoil is about like shooting .22 shorts , very little report. The first time I fired it I thought it didn't go off. I looked through the barrel to find the bullet had left and a peek through the scope revealed a nice hole right above the bullseye. :D

Years ago, when I had a Ruger #3 carbine in 30-40 Krag I used the 180 gr. Hornady and IMR 4350 powder. my load was right up there with the .308.

I've been looking at the Ruger's a lot lately. Almost bought a No. 3 in .22 Hornet he he other day, but the timing wasn't quite right. Really been bitten hard by the Single Shot bug again and want a couple of the Ruger's.
hoping to be able to make up some more .30-40s this weekend. Can't wait to shoot the '85 again.

I was told by an ex-Ruger employee that the early #1 & #3 Rifles had Douglas premium Barrels. I know my #3 carbine shot tiny groups at 100 yards. That 22 Hornet in a #3 is a rare bird, as is the 30-40. I also had a 375 Winchester in #3. I shot an Elk Bull in Oregon with the piece. One shot, and he dropped like a rock. I used a Hand load, 375 H&H 220 gr. Hprnady spritzer, with Reloader 7 powder. That piece would shoot.

I know I blew it not buying that .22 Hornet but had a couple big bills to pay this month.

I did have some time to load up 20 rounds of the 200 Gr. LRNGCs this afternoon. Can't wait to try those out this week.
Another great thing that has started to happen over the last couple of days is that my eyesight has started to settle back to where it is supposed to be. I'm really hoping it continues to improve. I picked up the 1885 this afternoon and I'm able to see the sights again! For me that's been the scariest part of this whole diabetes thing that was really depressing to me. I can deal with the rest of it.

Anyway,
It's all good!
