What 'Pop-Culture' thinks of 'Gun Owners'

I agree - do you EVER see someone at a shooting range, or hunting, or target shooting, or even 'carrying a gun' in a movie, unless it is because it is relevant to the plot showing them to be a bad-guy, or someone who will cause a gun accident...????

A bunch of retired guys in Terre Haute about 40 years ago set up a "shoot for muscular dystrophy" thing, and local shooting ranges hosted it. The premise was that if you showed up with the appropriate gun, you could shoot a target set up for your type of firearm and skill level, and you would get pledges of so many pennies or dollars per point you scored. Competitive shooters signed up people, and Boy Scout and 4H clubs did so, as did several churches. Complete novices were encouraged to compete (the ranges would DOUBLE the pledges they got), and were loaned 22 LR rifles to shoot [ridiculously easy] targets with, and provided hands-on coaching and safety-class at the range as they shot.

It was a GREAT event and raised tens of thousands for the charity, as well as generating positive 'media' attention. Of course some 'media' tried hard to demonize it, but when they showed up and saw little old ladies and wheelchair-bound veterans shooting innocent-looking bolt action and lever action rifles and revolvers and Ruger MkII target pistols at bullseye targets and bowling pins, they had a hard time making it a 'gun nuts' piece.

One problem lately is I don't see this level of involvement from our retired 'sportsmen' or 'gun clubs'. Maybe they are just all hunkered down in bunkers waiting for the End of Times...

I suspect some are just tired of being abused & demonized. :(
