22 hornet

Post by 4t5 »

Sold my 257 Roberts to a friend of mine, for deer hunting. Now I'm wanting a 22 hornet to punch paper, don't know why I like hard to find calibers so much? Anyhow I am wanting a 77/22 because the hawkeye was sweet, are the new ones the same design as the old ones or is it an improved version. Should I look for a different rifle for the hornet? Have no experience with the round.

Well the shop here has a 77/22 Hornet. CRS on price but will be there tomorrow if you want to know. I have a NEF handi barrel in 22h if you want to try it out. That is if you have a frame for one. Todd/3leg
PS they also have Zastava 22 Hornet bolt rifle that Remington stamped their name on!

Ruger has been sold. Remington is a 799 for $475. They also have Marlin 1895M in 450marlim with 18.5" barrel for $565. Is JM stamped. I get nothing but an attaboy if these sell! Todd/3leggedturtle

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

You've just reminded me that I have my uncle's old Winchester Model 43 that needs to go to the range.

I waited 40 years for an opportunity to own this rifle, and now it's just sitting in the gun rack soaking in oil. Like a prized horse put out to pasture.

I need to get off my back-side. I'm hoping to make it my 'new' small-game getter.

I have a 77/22Hornet, and it is well-made. Haven't reloaded for it yet to see potential accuracy.

Kinda prefer the K-Hornet, and would really like a 17 Hornet for target shooting. Could turn the Ruger into either I suppose. K-Hornet really easy.

I've had a few Hornets over the years - Two Savage 219's & one H&R break-open single-shot rifles, a horrible Ruger 77/22H, and a CZ-527H Lux.

The CZ was by far the most accurate Hornet of the bunch, is a walking varminter (light enough to tote around), and IMO good-looking.

A fellow board member (rbertalotto ) removed the delta-shaped TG webs, refinished the area & shortened the detachable magazine for a flush fit with the stock bottom line. (Thanks, Roy !)

I had a Ruger .22 Hornet, bought it when they first came out, a friend also bought one. Neither of us could hit a hat at 100 yards with them regardless of trying every combination of reloads known to the mind of man, recrowning, bedding, cursing, etc etc. We both got rid of them at first opportunity. We each now have the CZ, would not trade them for anything. (well, almost  ) If you get the CZ you will be a happy camper, even happier once you discover Lil Gun powder and vmax bullets. Prairie dogs will NOT be happy at all.

I have a 77/22 that is accurate, 1" about in 100 yards with WW ammo. I got a good one. I mite be willing to let it go. Prox. 70 rounds down the bore.

I had a Win 43 about 10 years ago. Got it fairly cheap, but it never shot as good as I thought it should have. I tried .223&.224's from 35-45 grains bullets , but never a tack driver even after bedding job & free float. It certainly didn't shoot as well as the No1 in 218 I traded it off for!
Then a few years ago I picked up a Savage 340 in hornet. It was a basket case with a few parts missing. Found parts that were needed and it shoots very well!

Those CZ are pretty rifles and if I was in the market for a new hornet that's the one I'd buy.

I've owned several Hornets . Got my first when I was 14 , it was a Winchester Model 43 I got from I thik the guys name was Don Heeth i Texas . Bought it from him oughtta Shotgun News wouldve been about 1975ish . Little gun shot ok with factory since I wasn't into loading at that time .

Later I got a Kimber 82 in 22 Hornet , by then I was loading and that little rifle did a smidge better . While I had the Kimber I acquired a circa 1938 Pre 64 Model 70 in 22 Hornet . This one had been reblued (nicely I might add) and the wood redone also very nicely . My handloads with that one at 100 yards were the best I'd had or have shot with a Hornet . That Model 70 was a consistent 3/4 MOA rifle . I was using AA1680 pushing the Nosler 40 grain BT .

Years later after the Kimber and Model 70 were gone I got a Ruger #1B 22 Hornet from a deceased friends widow . This one shot pretty well but not as well as that Model 70 .

Since then I've worked up loads for one friends 77-22 Hornet , another friends CZ527 Hornet and the friend with the 527 also got a 527 17 Hornet that I've worked up loads .

I'm not a big fan of the 77-22 . If I were to choose a moderatly priced Hornet I'd go with the CZ 527 and to be honest I'd defer to the 527 HB in 222 or 223 .

Consider this an enabling! :P. Ruger is still here. $550 with BSA 4x16 scope.

looks like i'm the odd man out here. My Hornet is a Contender Carbine with 21" tapered barrel and 2x7 Leupold. I can do a 3 shot 1" group at 100 yds with my 34 gr Midway Dogtown HP over 12.5 grs Lil Gun. Short, accurate, weighs in at 5.5lbs. Lots of guys don't like single shots but the fact that its a single shot makes me shoot it better. I have plenty of time to reload before a charging ground squirrel gets to me haha.....Mike
