Yes it could be a wedge for splitting small poles.

Back in the 1800`s when they would fall trees with axes and crosscut saws that would be 15-20 foot across they would drill holes in the tree and put pegs in them so they could lay the long saws on the pegs to get the cut started.
We don`t have trees that big here so I designed one that works great, here`s a picture of how it works.
Ya only drive it in about a inch so the teeth of the saw don`t touch the metal.

Thanks Piller, I also learned they cut the bottom of the notch with the cross saw then chopped the rest out.

There are some gigantic trees in that link. Being from a place where all trees not along the rivers were planted by people , it is impressive.

You still see huge stumps with the notches cut into them for the "springboards" that the fallers stood on while working with their axes and "misery whips" here in the Northwest, and particularly in the redwoods of northern California. It was hard and incredibly dangerous work.

Well fellars it was a work out but not bad for the first time, sawing in the bottom of the notch makes chopping it out a breeze.
Saw is rusty and sticky so don`t laugh to hard. :)

That's some work buddy. I'm afraid to even use a chain saw now, after falling over backward with a running husky in my hands. Shut it off while going down though. I really like your saw rest/guide for getting started. It let you get the hinge in just the right place.
