New to me a Model 71

Post by Hairtrigger »

I just picked up a new to me toy. Normal for me it is not perfect.... missing swivels and the insert for the peep sight and rear sight is removed
Could someone here point me in the direction for the insert and swivels?

What a find ! CONGRATS ! !

Those Super Grade's are some of the finest rifles to emerge from the New Haven factory !

The correct Winchester Super Grade QD studs (left, below) are 5/16" wide - much larger than "normal" 1/4" wide QD studs (right, below), like Uncle Mike's, etc.

Original SG sling loops came for 1" or 1-1/4" wide slings, are like chicken teeth today, and expensive ($100, +/-) if/when they can be found for sale.

IIRC, sometimes repro/clones show up every once in awhile on E-Bay, but just beware that some sellers pass them off as gennies, at gennie prices.

Regarding the missing aperture, you can:

1) Hunt/shoot through the ghost ring (which I do) - although the aperture's better for target shooting.

or

2) Visit a real gunsmith and ask to coonfinger his stash of apertures until you find one that threads into the aperture holder fully/smoothly - if it looks too "new", it can be distressed with vinegar to match the finish on the remainder of that #98 bolt peepsight.

NICE! You got the bolt peep, I'm jealous. The deluxes with bolt peep were out my price range around here. Still reasonable for an old Winchester, but more than I had to spend.
It's a heavy gun for hunting deer. Once I wack a deer with mine. It will get a diet of lead, shooting steel targets. The 1895 Win is just a better carrying gun for hunting.

Has the top of the left locking bolt got some pitting...?

Probably not an issue as long as it is just on the very top, but I'd check it thoroughly.

A really fine looking old rifle, enjoy it for what it is.

This rifle has not been cleaned or used in a very long time. Definitely needs a good cleaning and inspection

Nice 71 for sure! Theres nothing special about the peep insert. Any Lyman will fit, but if you're going to shoot it, get a Williams Twi-Light aperture. Their available with different diameter sight holes.
