Same thing in Indiana with bobcats.....

Only after DNR trailcams showed em were they 'real'.

I miss hearing the occasional bowl/scream of bobcats, so I hope they return.

Meh. We had a kitty killed here in town a whopping 1/2 block from my house... after it had been scouting out the neighborhood elementary school (3 blocks) and Jr High (6 blocks) for a few days.

Got cornered under my neighbor's deck...

We have had quite a few big cat sighting here in NJ, State says they don't exist here. Those cats are predators, we have A LOT of deer, common sense says the cats are gonna find the deer. Now we have song dogs, bears and both lions and bobs.
Heck just a couple weeks ago a bob wandered into someone's house scaring the democrat outta the lady who locked herself & kids in the bathroom. Called the police who then shooed it out of the house.
Years back I had a bear chewing on the corner of my house trying to get a window mounted bird feeder F&G said I was baiting the bear, until I took down my feeders they wouldn't bring a culvert trap. I really wanted to let my JRT terrorize a trapped bear!

Pitchy, keep yer wits about you with that kitty in the area! I hear those are good on the dinner plate!

Best way to catch it is to get yourself a liberal jogger to run around your property- it works in California!!

People catch em here on trail cams and report sightings but mostly they keep out of sight in the big woods. Everybody gets upset cause the state won't admit they are here.
I keep telling them they should be glad of that. Once they confirm it, the Gov't can swoop it and make a "Spotted Owl" out of em and throw us out of our own state.

I think you were right the first time Pitchy, I'm pretty sure that is a bear track. I live in Utah and chasing both bear and lions with hounds has been a passion of mine for over 30 years now, and I come across both kind of tracks on a fairly regular basis. One of the primary clues in the size relationship between the rear pad and toes as well as the toe arc for lions. Just for comparison, here is a bear track:

Image

Here is a picture of a female lion track, note the classic 3 lobed rear pad and the arc of the toes:

I wish I had a clearer picture of a lion track saved but hopefully everyone can see the difference.

Thanks for those pictures Kevin and I think your right, sorry if I misled anyone there have been cougar sightings in the area though.
The culprit was at the bird feeders this morning a young black bear :)

The local game cops claimed the same thing about the one running the canyon behind me. When they couldn't catch it (heck all they were missing when they "searched" was the brass band) the gave a story about it going "home"). They never explained by scruff, fluffy, just about all of the raccoons, rabbits, possum and squirrels kept disappearing. It finally ate it's way through the food supply and moved on.

Now we have a pack of at least four coyotes in the same canyon (critter population came back in just a few years). And, according to the same "experts" we don't have any coyotes.

Oh, by the way, photos and video of both types of critters failed to convince the "experts".

Want to hear something really funny. When I ask the female "expert" from Orange County about her experience in the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting etc., she told me she didn't need any of that, she had a degree from a university. God save us from over educated "experts" who have no idea what they are talking about. Or as one of my favorite teachers called them "educated idiots".

Pitchy, you know that even young bears can hurt you if they get aggressive. Be careful and don't let yourself get between it and any escape route. I don't see any point to giving it any chance to chew on you.

Does your state allow you to kill a wild animal if it starts biting a human? Some states require the human to die before fighting back.

I was told by an old retired trapper that if you want rid of such critters to put fish hooks in meat, put the meat out where it'll be found & eaten. Hooks catch in mouth, throat, stomach or intestines which will eventually lead to death. That to me is an awful thing to do but I guess if that is the only recourse to a problem critter...

Good luck for her surgery and speedy recovery!

When I have bears in the yard trying to get my feeders I sneak the upstairs window open, fling out a pack of fire crackers on top of them then run down stairs, out the door with bottle rockets and chase them. Most of the time they run off stop and give me the stink eye! Absolutely not afraid of people.

I have to figure out how to video it, throw fire crackers and chase them by myself.

Yep, its the right size bear to get nasty with a guy, I threw a 10 in. cast iron skillet & hit one in the rump while he was
rooting in my burning barrel & instantly he came at me mad as heck, next time I blasted off the 12 ga. a few times
that sort of worked but they change their hours to later in the night

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers for Norma fellars, appreciated.

I shot the bear with the pellet rife at about 50 yards when he went down the driveway, they have cubs now also which makes it more dangerous.
In fact we just seen one cross the highway with two small cubs this morning on the way to town.
