Neck surgery today the 15th

Post by J Miller »

For almost a year and a half I've been fighting circumstances to get the neck surgery done.
When I first went to the neurologist it was only to be one disk replaced with two vertebras fused. Now it's three disks and 4 vertebras fused.

So tomorrow the 15th is the day. Finally, after a bout with spiking blood pressure, a ruptured colo-rectal abscess and surgery, and a visit to a cardiologist for a stress exam and other tests to placate the paranoias of the neurologist, tomorrow is the day.

I'm hoping for the best, but even the neurologist can't guarantee the damage done by the disks pinching my spinal cord will be reversed.

So, please keep me, my wife and the surgeons in your thoughts and prayers for tomorrow. If all goes well I'll be home sometime late tomorrow. Hopefully I wont have to stay over night.

Joe

UPDATE::
Joe came through the surgery OK. Whew!!! the Doctor said something to me about taking out several bone spurs and a couple shattered discs. I think he said that they only had to fuse three of the vertebrae. He has to stay at the hospital overnight to make sure that everything drains properly and that there is no swelling in the area of the surgery. He should be home by midday tomorrow. He was totally groggy today, almost in a funny way.
One good thing is that the numbness that he has been feeling in his face was gone for now. The nurse (practitioner?) said that could come and go over the next few weeks of healing. Hopefully it will be gone all the way and stay that way.

There is some decent evidence that if you are in the 1/3rd of the population with a 'MTHFR' mutation, supplementing with methylfolate, METHYLcobalamin (not cyano), pyridoxal phosphate and riboflavin phosphate (not the typical OTC forms) can help neurologic healing and neuropathy. If you are in the other 2/3rd of the population, the 'ordinary' form of folic acid might help, but getting tested is a good idea. Some labs will do the test for as low as $10 from the patient as co-pay.

Honey I"m Home!

Got home about 14:30 this afternoon, very tired and a wee bit whoozie. Otherwise in pretty good condition.
I have more movement in my neck just one day after the surgery than I have had for the last several years. Minimal pain, although I've got a prescription for a major pain med and a muscle relaxer which I have just taken the first dose of.

It's weird how the surgery was done. The surgeon went in the front of my neck just below the adams apple to do the spinal surgery. All you can see is of the incision is where the bandage covers it. The nurse said the actual cut is maybe a 1 1/4".
IMG_7115.JPG
You can see the size of the incision, and the little red dot near the right edge of the bandage is where the drain tube was. No idea how many stitches is in there.

To be honest I am very tired and mentally groggy, two nights without sleep will do that to you.
But I feel totally different and better. This doctor is amazing. I'll do a little update in a coupe days.

I am restricted to lifting no more than 10 pounds and I can't drive till the DR releases me. So I'll have to find something easy to do.

I'm not sure why I was so afraid of this, but there was no reason for me to be.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers, I really do appreciate them.

Joe

It has to do with genetics. Problem I see is that AJMD429 is one of the rare ones who even knows that the Cytochrome P450 system has several different enzymes which break chemicals down, and that different ones of the enzymes break down different chemicals. AJMD429 was a Pharmacist, and that is most of why he knows the medications the way he does.
I am one of the very, very rare people who completely lack the 2C19 enzyme of the Cytochrome P450 system. I can't take Tylenol or any medicine for cholesterol, and aspirin does nothing at all for me or to me. It also means I can't be infected with bubonic plague or hepatitis b.

Joe, glad you are better. Take vitamin D to heal the bones. Natural sources work well. A little sunlight to turn the cholesterol into vitamin D, a little cod liver oil, or some such source is helpful. Also, get calcium. The B12 form that is not cyanocobalamin is hard to find. Do not look for it at a regular drug store. Go to a health food store for it.
Don't overdo it, but don't just sit and do nothing. Both are bad for healing.

The exhaustion from the lack of sleep the night before the surgery and the two days after has caught up with me. Also I'm thinking I might have felt too good, too soon, as most everything hurts like hell now. Just slept through the NASCAR race, used the noise to block out all the house sounds. And I need to figure out how to make a tilted area in the bed so I can sleep in a semi-siting up position. I can't sleep flat on my back or my sides yet.

Parts of me seem to be still better, other parts almost feel like they have regressed.

I'll just keep resting.

A day of rest is probably good. Don't stay down too long. Moving a little and carefully is good for recovery. You might have overdone it a little if you could sleep through NASCAR racing.
