Levergunner with double rifle shoots antelope
I guess if we can discuss automatic rifles and pistols we can talk about double rifles and foreign antelope imported from India, right?
My Nilgai hunt this week with another levergunner as PH, pickup driver, and head skinner and quarter follows:
Primary characters: myself, my son Colin and PH Joe.
South Texas Nilgai with .405 Double Rifle
After several days of rain, the country around Hondo was green and the roads muddy, so muddy, that we had to walk into the ranch from a county road to hunt. After 3 hours of tramping about in the 90 degree heat with boots heavy with mud, we took a break for lunch. We had seen a lot of exotic game and lots of Nilgai tracks, but no Nilgai.
We resumed hunting mid afternoon and a call from the ranch owner directed us to an area thick with typical south Texas brush, all green from spring rains. Finally, fresh Nilgai tracks, and then two young bulls that would make great eating. My son had the first shot with his .458 Socom and one was down. The second jumped to a two track and dashed back into the brush within a few yards. We waited him out and soon saw him through the brush to my left. We must have been in cover too because when I went down on one knee he stepped into the clear for a broadside shot at 30 yards. He went down at the shot and then staggered a few steps and was down for good. The 300 grain Barnes TSX had passed through the left front leg, heart, lugs, and off into the brush.
We were able to get the F250 4WD in so we could field dress the antelope , take pix, and then get out to the county road to circle back to the lodge, cleaning area, and cooler. With both Nilgai quartered and hanging for the night, we headed for our nearby hotel to clean up before locating the one open eatery at 10 PM; McDonalds!
WE saw some great exotics while out hunting and are already planning our next hunt. Wink
Doubles are fast and fun in close quarters!

I have wanted to shoot one of those for a long time! I've always heard they are tough critters.
As for what type of gun used for any pursuit, to each his own- I'm not prejudiced as long as it goes BANG!

Re: Levergunner with double rifle shoots antelope
6 - 2225 - 2250 fps with VV N133.
Essentially the same as factory Hornady 300 grain ammo. I keep all my 300 grain hand loads in that range so as not to worry about sight adjustment; plus, I can always buy factory ammo in a pinch. I load several different bullets for fun and for different applications.
The 400 grain bullets run between 2040 and 2070 fps with N133 in both my double and my Miroku/Winchester 1895 .405. That is a killing
DG load and I have taken a cape buffalo with it.
Gunny - Full grown Nilgai bulls can go up to 800 pounds and are very tough; must shoot them just right for a one shot kill.
Tip from my PH - take your sights up one front leg and fire at about 1/3 up body. This works like a charm on Nilgai, water buff, and most African animals. Of course the hunter should study the body structure in case a broadside shot is not possible.

Re: Levergunner with double rifle shoots antelope
The Nilgai I've seen in south TX are... big. How the heck did you manage to find one that you didn't need a team and a truck to haul out?
Congratulations on your hunt, Charles. Sounds like you had fun. That one looks like it will be good eating.

Re: Levergunner with double rifle shoots antelope
Fred,
A few months back, I had requested females because we wanted the meat (and the big mature males are tougher and MUCH more costly) but the landowner said he would let us have the 18-24 month old males at the same price so,,,, They are already over at Po Boys being processed. We have a new grill/smoker here at the farm and I am looking forward to cooking the ribs and tenderloins.
We did have a good time except for the mud, but the rain has greened up the ranch - lots better cover than usual.
Thanks for the nice compliments on the rifle. I really like it and since it has been re-regulated to put 4 shots in an inch square, I like to hunt with it.
Gunny, the rifle is custom except for the Simons action and shoots really well.

Re: Levergunner with double rifle shoots antelope
Six,
You are on to something! Very perceptive. The Hornady 41 mag pistol bullets shoot very well in my .405 rifles at velocities from ho-hum to hot darn! Also there are some very good lighter cast bullets available that should move on out where the PDogs live.
What are the specifics of the bullets your above post?
In August, my son and I are going to spend 3 days shooting at the Whittington Center and then down to Eagles Nest for a Pronghorn and PD hunt. We will both take our .223 rifles, but how much fun would it be to blast a few dog mounds away with the dog still on it???
BTW, I have already taken a New Mexico pronghorn with my 1895 .405 at about 10 to 15 yards. Posted that story here years ago.
Ditto for my 1886 .45-90 at 110 yards.

CRS, They are both 300 grainers..mike .412...one has the gas check. I size these down for the 40-82.
I forgot about the 41 mag bullets...sure, don't see why they would not work.--6
