Looking for Model '92 buttstock

Post by Hank Dodge »

I just acquired an 1892 Winchester that someone has done a bit of shade tree "gunsmithing" work on. It's in pretty poor shape as it stands, but I think I'd like to try and bring it back to a shooter if I can. The first thing I need to find a used buttstock for it. Not looking for anything other than functional, but would prefer rifle style over a carbine. Does anyone have an idea where I might turn one up fairly cheap?

Thanks,

Hank

.

Perhaps others here, more knowledgeable than me on stock fit, can chime in - but methinks a Model 94 buttstock would be a close fit AND a lot easier to come by.

The Pre WWII 94 used the same wood as the 92's. But, that changed after the war with the post war 94 stock being different. The 94 stock will bolt on but there is some gaps that will need to be filled.
Here is an example of a 92 with a post war 94 butstock. The gaps are up by the hammer where the upper tang widens .

This is correct and I just knew I had one of those laying around. This is a new reproduction made from nice wood and is made for the pre-64 or 1892 action. Take note...it is cut for the standard shotgun buttplate and is unfitted. This means it will fit on the gun----all holes are already drilled----- but the tang areas of the stock need to be sanded to match the tang .

$100. And that includes shipping.------6

Hank:

My gun maker believes he will complete metamorphosis of my straight grip Rossi 92 carbine to half-pistol grip rifle sometime in June. I should be receiving the parts no longer used when rifle is returned. If Rossi's stock set meets your needs, I can ship butt stock or complete wood set - my treat.

Hello Hank,

The fairly cheap part might be your catch! If you indeed have a sporting rifle configuration then a crescent rifle butt stock is by far the most common. If it is a saddle ring carbine then the more rounded carbine stock made of gumwood versus walnut is correct. As it has been mention a butt stock form a Model 1894/94 gun will fit reasonably well. Here are several choices being sold on Gunbroker.com right now.
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/647380295 This one is very nice and has not been sanded or altered.
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/648224890 This has been sanded at some time and is very dark. It might not match the fore end very well. But it is cheap so far.
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/648552619 This is not very good at all. Sanded and fits poorly especially at the butt plate. I personally would pass on it.

Hope this helps
Michael

PS. Could I add your rifle into my research survey I ma working on? I appreciate the help. http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

Thanks you so much for the generous offer. I do appreciate it, but pass that stock on to someone else in need of a carbine stock. I think I've got a solution worked out for this rifle at this point.

I really do appreciate all the input from you guys. I've been out of it here for a while, but starting to have a bit more time for this stuff again. This forum is always a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks again,

Hank
