black powder velocity question

Post by Carlsen Highway »

Gentlemen, a query for those who might like to hazard a guess:

I am thinking of getting one of those Remington revolving carbines made by Uberti. It will be my first cap and ball revolver. My question is if anyone could hazard a ballpark guess who fast a 140 grain .45 cal round ball would go with 40 grains of 3f black powder out of one of these with its' 18 inch barrel?

My only comparison is a .430 cal 200 grain bullet from a .44-40 with 36 grains of 3F BP out of a 20 inch barrel, which goes bang on 1200 fps.

I am guessing myself that the 140 grain round ball / 40 grains BP / 18 barrel, would be going about the same velocity ?

I don't believe you will get more than 35 grains in the chamber and you will have some loss at the barrel/cylinder gap.

And you HAVE to keep that supporting hand BEHIND the cylinder gap!

QuickLoad predicts 1288 FPS for the specifications you gave using Goex 3f powder.

Apparently 40 grains is a max charge with the round ball in these. I dont know how much would be lost with the cylinder gap. It is not critical though, I am just thinking about performance because its main duty will be rabbit and hare hunting.

I just poured 40 grains in mine and you would have to do some serious compressing to get a ball in. Thirty five leaves a little room and if you get the ball right on the edge of the chamber opening on a compressed load it can move forward under the recoil of a heavy load (even if you have a good fitting ball) and lock the gun up so that you have to shave the projecting ball off with a knife to get the cylinder to rotate for the next shot. BTW you will be working on a caped chamber trying to shave the ball or force it back in, not a good idea. Twenty grains will put a ball through a rabbit, what more do you need?

Just to follow up on this - I got the .44 cap and ball revolver carbine (I think of it as the pistol carbine) and it is a great amount of fun to shoot. It is also quite accurate, I can put three rounds balls through one hole at 25 metres.

I have standardised on 35 grains of 3F as a good load and chronographed a .454 round ball at 1253 fps at the muzzle, which is a pretty good velocity. It seems to drop off quickly with a round ball, and so I would probably limit deer shooting to 50 metres. But I have got everything within that distance nailed...and she is the lightest little thing to carry.
The wife saw it and said, that's cute. That's a ladies gun...

I'm glad to hear that you got one and are having such good results. Your reported accuracy and muzzle velocity are impressive. It ought to deadly on small game. They are so light and well balanced that having to keep both hands back of the cylinder is not a disadvantage and I expect you could shoot one accurately using only one hand. I used to have a Remington Nylon 66 that I could shoot one handed, arm extended like a pistol and shoot as well as any pistol.

Thanks for the range report. It's nice when it works out better than expected. Todd

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

That is a Ladies Rifle. Sharon Stone is shown with one in the Western Movie, "The Quick And the Dead".

I had one, just be sure you hold it right when firing. Keep your support hand behind the cylinder. That is what the second finger grove is for on the Brass trigger guard.
They make a 45 Colt cartridge cylinder for the piece.
Fun little shooter, have fun and be safe !

It would probably work fine but as I said they are so light you don't need the other hand forward of the trigger guard.

If the wife says it's a ladies gun, IT IS A LADIES GUN!

My most recent purchase was a Ruger SP101 3" . 357. I bought it for myself for my birthday. When I brought it home I showed it to my wife and asked her what she thought of it. She looked at it hefted it about a bit and said, you know, you could sell that S&W M65 you have and buy me one of these. Note to self right?

Let's see, her birthday is in July. No that better not happen or y'all will seeing my name in the paper as KIA.

I have long been tempted to play with one of these myself. Glad you are getting such nice performance from yours, Carlsen.
