Guess I'm Done Going to New Orleans!

Post by mohavesam »

During a recent meeting at the Michaud Assembly Facility, all attendees were warned about the local "killing zones" and carjacking areas - places to stay clear of in daylight or night time. Many areas are still void of buildings or residents since the 2005 natural disaster... We all took the handouts. Even NASA professionals who've lived in the area for decades are avoiding most areas and making sure they are home and locked down well before dark.

It is clear to any rational person then, to avoid the Ne Orleans areas with family vacations or even through-travel. The place is an armpit, though I do love the food.

I'll offer my personal perspective about New Orleans. I live about a three hour drive from New Orleans and have been visiting there all of my adult life. Since I retired a few years ago I drive over around five or six times a year. People ask my why I visit New Orleans. Two words: Food and Music!

One correction to your description of what happened to New Orleans as a "natural disaster". It was not Katrina in and of herself that destroyed New Orleans, it was the failure of the levees holding the rising waters back, a man made disaster. And that is all due to corrupt politicians and contractors paying kickbacks to build substandard levees. If the levees had not failed there would have been some overwashing of the tops of the levees and some flooding but not the inundation of most of the city. They were supposed to be built to hold up to the overwash without erosion on the inland side of base of the levee. They "skipped" this step to save money. Just like the recent fiasco out in California with the poorly constructed Oroville dam spillway. And yes, all those levees were constructed and maintained under Democratic administrations, just like Oroville.

As to the crime in New Orleans. Yes it is bad, but if you dig deeper into that link you provided you will see that the murder rate is half what it was prior to Katrina. Like most big cities most of the murders are drug and gang related. Don't get involved with drugs and gangs and don't get involved in the crossfire and your chances of being involved in a violent crime are much less.

Most of the tourist areas are pretty safe with a police presence. The politicians see to that because tourism is what drives the New Orleans economy. There was shooting death on Bourbon Street this year the weekend of the Grambling/Southern University football game. It involved "fans" of both teams taunting each other that ended in gunfire. So basically a gang related shooting .

Situational awareness is the key when visiting New Orleans. I wasn't there on Bourbon St. that night (in fact I avoid Bourbon Street like the plague, it has turned into Disneyland for drunks over my lifetime), but I can guarantee you would have had your radar on high alert before the shooting started and would have had a chance to get out.

There also seems to be an increase in road rage shootings. I was there last year when an ex New Orleans Saints football player was killed in just such an incident, and not far from where I was staying in a B&B in the Garden District, not a low rent neighborhood.

What I am always alert far is the more likely possibility of a robbery, either an armed stickup or a pick pocket. I carry most of my money, credit cards, and ID in an inside the waistband wallet secured to my belt. I keep a "throw down" wallet with small bills in my back pocket and usually have an old cell phone that doesn't work. That is what the stick up artists are usually after. I make my wife wear costume jewelry only.

I also carry when in New Orleans. They have a reciprocal concealed carry agreement with Florida and I am a retired federal LEO. If the armed stickup ever happens I will give up my dummy wallet and old cell phone and be prepared for armed combat if the need arises. Not because I have any sympathy for the thugs or condone what they do, but because I don't want to have to spend what would be an otherwise enjoyable week sitting in a police station trying to justify my actions. And like the rest of the city government the NOPD has a long and well deserved reputation for corruption and incompetence.

As much as I enjoy visiting New Orleans, I would not want to live there. (My uncle lived there for 30 years and left as soon as he retired because of the crime). Besides the crime, the city is a bastion of liberalism. Even though I have come to know many people who live there, including some of the musicians in the jazz clubs on Frenchmen St., I avoid discussing politics with them in order to keep things cordial.

Wow! 66 GTO could not have said it better...I learned a few things. Being a country person I was never able to navigate the cites too well, both in navigation and dealing with those types....so I just stayed away to avoid aggravation. Don't think I've been in downtown Philly more than 6 times in my life and I'm only 30 miles away.

I believe a bigger threat when going into the cities is having your car stolen/damaged. Don't need the headaches.---6

Like every city NOLA has it's bad areas, and good areas. Most tourist areas are pretty well patrolled. That said, bad things can and do happen in any part of any city. I won't let someone's idea of how bad things are keep me from enjoying tourist places. There's just too much to see and do to let the idiots win.

I have friends that live in New orleans. They plan their vaca during Mardi Gras. SO THEY CAN LEAVE TOWN!!!

I grew up in SE Texas but my Dad's family was from south Louisiana. Still have family there. If you want to experience the real cajun culture visit any of the small towns during Mardi Gras. Places like Breaux Bridge, Jenning, Golden Meadow, Grand isle, New Iberia or Franklin. Most have parades but the real fun is going from house to house meeting the folks most all are cooking in the front yard and inviting everyone to join in. Cajuns know how to pass a good time.
Since we moved to Central Texas I miss Port Arthur's Cajun restaurants, markets and night clubs. Port Arthur Texas even has their own Mardi Gras

For Easter weekend we are having a crawfish, crab, shrimp boil here. Got some red snapper we gonna fry up too. Some Nicks smoke boudin and fresh pork cracklins. Gonna have to import most of this stuff, though.

I enjoy good food and people.

Locally, I do what I can to avoid bad food or bad people in my personal life; life is too short & too full of good stuff to deal with bad BS.

Brave souls.
I guess I over-reacted to NASA & Northrup printing and handing out written warnings/maps about the known high-risks - random stop-sign carjackings and killings - to visitors and international professionals. ? Nothing like a group of ragtags walking your way while you sit at a red light. They ain't Eagle Scouts ... And without a gun (air-) traveling to the area is a foolish venture. Even local residents/workers advised strongly to "be in and locked up". Savages. Wish I could tell you what I really mean.

Sorry, I'll heed the warnings. I put the entire area on the "no go" list for meetings and assemblies. Done.

(Used to live in Baton Rouge and Monroe so I am not entirely green on the locals!)

What has traveling by air got to do with not being able to have a gun? As long as you don't have a layover in a place like NYC what's the hang up?

I will admit that when I travel by air I take a firearm I won't loose to much on if it is stolen.

I live just on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, about 20 min north of New Orleans. What really messed up New Orleans is simple. Before Katrina there was several Projects such as the BW Cooper Projects, Caliope Projects, Fisher and others. Families lived in those projects their whole lives and they became territories. They were extremely high in crime and of course many non-residents would never go in to those areas. They often feuded with each other and in the 1990s when some of the residents hit it big in the Rap "music" industry the different projects really started feuding with eachother through their raps and on the street.

After Katrina the City thought it would be a good thing to tear down those projects and spread those people who have been fighting with each other their whole lives all over New Orleans. So now, instead of high crime in certain areas of New Orleans you have it spread out across the whole city. People who have hated each other their whole life because they lived in a different project are now living next door to each other and it is spread out over the whole city. Places that never had that much crime are now full of crime.

Its really sad. New Orleans is a beautiful city with lots of rich history, architect, food and much more. I rarely ever go there anymore because as good as that stuff is, I like my life better. The politicians have ruined New Orleans. The mayor there is more worried about some 100+ year old Confederate Monuments than the actual cause of real crimes in the city. His sister was a crook and disgrace to Louisiana as Governor and Mitch is a disgrace as a Mayor. I hope that he is ran out of town and then drug back to stand trial also like Nagin.

The city is not a complete WAR ZONE. My mom and dad have an apartment right near the French Market that they go over too and spend the weekend often. Its really like any big city. You have to be aware of your situation and try not to look like a complete tourist. While the crime is more spread out now......there are still many good people there.

The crime is there, trust me. We get our News from New Orleans and every night its "murder" , triple homicide, car jacking, etc. The majority of crimes committed there are not against tourists though. It happens but the bulk of those crimes are against people who have personal problems with each other.

I just returned from five days in New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival. It was crawling with people, more than I have seen there in years, including last February during the first week of Carnival.

I made it out alive and didn't hear any gunshots (and I have heard gunshots in New Orleans before, on Canal Street at Rampart near one of the housing projects). I spent most of my time in the French Quarter and on Frenchmen Street. There were the usual street freaks, bums, and beggars among the thousands of tourists. And there was a heavy police presence every where I went, even on Frenchmen Street (outside the French Quarter Festival area). I stayed off Bourbon Street at night so I didn't see any public drunkenness, even though I spent every night in jazz clubs where drinking is mandatory.

I didn't pay any attention to the news while there, but I have no doubt there was violent crime occurring somewhere in the city, but I never felt threatened or unsafe. I ran into quite a few locals, both black and white, not just tourists, and I have always found old time natives New Orleans to be among the friendliest and talkative people anywhere.

Is it as safe as the rural area where I choose to live? No. And I would not want to live there, but don't be afraid to visit New Orleans. Just be aware of your surroundings and be smart.
