Model 99 accuracy

Post by Old Savage »

Here is a bit of evidence regarding the accuracy of the Model 99 and the .300 Savage. This one an EG made in 1954.

They're plenty 'nuf accurate for hunting, Fred - Here's the 1st group I shot with my 1914 Model 1899H in .303 Savage (it measures 1-7/8" @ 100yds), with a red dot sight. (I recycled a shoot-n-see target from a different range session, with a different gun - why the stickers over those boolit holes)

The old ones keep amzazing me too, even the rifle. Here's my 1920 Model 99F .303 Savage with lightweight-taperedt 20" barrel and Lyman 57SA aperature sight.

It looks like it's a good shooter too, Keith - AND it carries the same lightweight 20" bbl as my Model 1899H !

Those 1899/99's with that lightweight 20" barrel seem a lot handier than the 20" barreled Winchester 94's & Marlin 336's, I've had in the past - and waaaaay lighter/handier than 3-4 Model 99's in .300 Savage I've had.

Pete, I agree with you. Great little, well-balanced rifles. I have a 1899H in .30-30' too. Really like both of them. Years ago my father-in-law gave me a really nice Browning Safari II; I much prefer taking the 99F to the stand .. just like the way it handles and the nostalgia that goes along with it.

Here is the very first target I shot with my savage 99 EG in 300 Savage made in 1950. Open sites and reloads, the squares are 1/2 inch in size.

I've got an old 99 in .300 Savage (family heirloom). I've had it a few years now but I never have gotten around to firing it. I'd like to find a vintage tang peep for it and take it out hunting sometime. The accuracy you guys are getting is inspiring me to get mine out and put to use!

I would suggest that you google "Savage 99 tang sight for sale" as I did last month - and found/bought a nice vintage Lyman 1-A for a little over $100 w/free shipping.

I did, however, have to buy the proper screws to mount it ($5 @ ebay).

FWIW, I googled it daily for several weeks before I found one for sale (not on auction) @ a reasonable price.

Great posts guys. Reminds me of when I had a 99F in 250/3000 many years ago. It had the 1 in 14" twist barrel so it didn't like bullets heavier than 87 grains but it would put them in dime sized groups, as long as you let it cool between shots. Loaned it to some boys who stuck a case in the chamber and tried to dig it out with a nut pick. I got it out and back in service but I had to hone the chamber out to where the cases looked sorta bulged. Traded it for a 94 in 32 Special.

Hawkcreek,
Nice looking EG. Here is another option besides a tang-mounted peep. It's called a "Lightfoot" mount; uses the rear sight dovetail and rear tang screws. I shot .93" group with this rifle when I was working up loads (100 yds).

Now that would be just the ticket for load development when the old eyes can't be trusted anymore. Thanks for the tip, Keith: I've got to chase one of those down!

Doggone it, fellas, this thread is making me hurt all over for a 99. Mebbe I'd better go peek down the bore of that .303 at the pawn shop ...

My 300 99F will do well under an inch at 100 yd. with 150gn Silvertips. Great guns the 99s!

I think the most accurate 99 I did have (whish I still had it) was a 99F in 284 Win. Next would of been my 99f in 243 Win. Besides these two I did have a 300 Savage, 250 Savage and a 30-30 but I think the 284 Win. did have the best trigger on it. The only one I have left is my 99F in 358 Win.

I've only tried one load in it so far using 200 grain Hornady's along with IMR 3031. The best I can get out that load was slightly over 3" at 100 yards. When the time comes I'll work up some better loads for it but I would say it has the WORST trigger pull out of all of them.

Every 99 I've shot shoots good. Mine is in .308 It's from the mid '60s. Tang safety and the aluminum cartridge counter. About the only thing I don't like on my version is the stock. It has the fat forearm and pressed checkering . Butt stock has that ugly monte carlo cheekpiece. Every year I keep telling myself to do something about the wood but have not had the time to do anything about it.

Another example of potential, a .250 Savage made in 54.
