Had a Garand Time Today

Post by Griff »

Shot a few rounds thru the Garand M-1 today! The folks had complained about my "HOT" load on their steel targets at the last match, so I loaded up some reduced loads... about 2000 fps! I probably should have sighted them in... On the ½ size silhouettes, I was missing low! Go figure! Now I have load up some more to sight some in!! I guess, its all fair when it's your fellow competitors telling you this!!!

Nice. And, it functioned ok with that load?

I was able to approximate 7.62x39 loads using R-P 125 gr SP and 4895. Much easier on the poor old arthritic shoulder as well as steel targets......

Yep, cycled and ejected with authority.
I was pleasantly surprised. Now, I just have to waste some paper and sight it in.

Garands also do well with cast bullets. I have one of the first National Matches made in 1953 that somehow managed to stay hidden in a closet somewhere until about 5 years ago when it surfaced from the son of the original owner in Colorado who was a career military guy. My son snagged it and sent it home to me...naturally. :D

Frugal as I am with jacketed bullets, I started shooting cast at about 1800 and that baby will shoot all day without leading at all....perfect bore. It really loves the 150 Hornady with a dose of 3031 or 4895 for when I want to shoot out to 500 meters.

Try some cast Griff. I used 5744 with perfect results----6

Yes, these were cast... Saeco 316 mold, 150 gr FNGC. When I finally put the gun down on the bench, I was hitting about 6" low, dead center... but, like I said, I need to put them on paper.

How much 5744 for a 150 grain cast to get 2400 FPS from your grand ?

6 Point,
Just looked at my notes and I used the 170 grain Saeco tapered bullet sized .311

26 grains of 5744 gave 1823

32 grains gave 2248

Thanks ! I'm trying to get a decent load in my Mannlicher Schoenauer 270 witha 150 cast bullet . This will give me sort of an idea where to start . Already have data for SR4759 after shooting those I'll try 5744 and perhaps IMR3031.

That was my son. He was just firing a few rounds to try it out at the 100 yard steel. I dont get into the kneeling much anymore hurts to darn much to do it if I dont have too

I have never shot a Garand, but I traded for an M1A, worked up a cast load for it, was good fun until I ran into a guy that REALLY wanted it. He had a Browning Medalist.22 that was just gorgeous! So we traded, then I found out why he traded it! That thing rattled itself loose under recoil! I tried everything short of welding the screws but no matter what it would shoot loose. Even my instructors were at a loss as to keep it tight. So I traded it off on a Rem 700 in .17 Rem and some cash back!

The M-1A is very much just a Garand with a removable magazine. And chambered in the whimpy 7.62NATO round. (Flame suit on).

Some public ranges in this area won't let you shoot FMJ, so either soft nose or cast is just about necessary. Plus, since almost all of my shooting is on steel, the cast IS a necessity.

Called our friend and fellow levergunner RKrodle today and made arrangements to meet for another Garand day this Sat... weather permitting. Loaded up some powder coated boolits I did the other night!

Hopefully, these'll shoot good and I can find out just where to adjust my sight... 2,000fps behind 32.3 grains of 4064 with this 150 grain GCFN!
