Last September's hunt in Poland

Post by piller »

Finally, I have fixed the issues which prevented me from posting pictures. Last September, I went to Poland to hunt Red Stag, Roe deer, and wild boar. The outfitter was http://www.ultimatehunting.eu and they were exactly as promised. Total price without airplane tickets was about $3,600. I had to get approval from the Polish Embassy to take my Remington 700 into Poland. It is in 30-06, and the loads were 180 grain Core Lokt, 180 grain Winchester, and hand loaded rounds with 180 grain Barnes X bullets and Reloader 17 powder, and hand loaded 180 grain Nosler Partitions with H4350.

I flew Lufthansa airlines and only had to change planes once. The change was in Frankfurt, and from there I flew to Jelenia Gora, Poland. The guide, Piotr Potaczla, met me at the airport and took me to the hotel in Brunow. It was excellent. All that you need, and little that you don't. Not opulent, but it was very nice.

I hunted with a guide named Robert. The first night we saw a few female stag, but no bucks. Same the second night. The third night, it changed. We were watching 3 young bucks sparring and pawing the ground, when off to our left came a roaring sort of like a cross between an elk and a longhorn bull. We hardly dared to breathe as a big stag came out into the meadow we were watching. We watched until he scared off the 3 young bucks, and he then rolled and played in a mud pit, came out covered with mud and whatever else was in there, and stood steaming and roared his intentions to go looking for love. I took the shot. We were hunting by moonlight and my Nikon scope was nice and clear, but I was too nervous and forgot to look through the scope while bringing it down onto him so that I had an idea where the crosshairs were. I hit it just behind the ribs. I heard the hit, and knew that the Nosler Partition had done damage, but he was still on his feet. He started to run. I quickly cycled the action and this time I remembered to get a clear view above him and bring the scope down onto him where I could keep the cross hairs in the right place. at the second shot, he dropped. The bullet went through the near shoulder, the left one, and through the heart and lungs. Did I mention anywhere else that I am a fan of Nosler Partitions?

The next night Robert and I went out for a Roe Buck. I didn't do my research and found out that they were sort of small. They are a really nice little trophy, but the 180 grain was almost too much. I used the Core Lokt on it. Here is a picture of it on the back of Robert's SUV after it has been field dressed. I was a nice little buck. I will post a better picture when I can get the files transferred from my phone to this computer.

Finally, we went to get the wild boar. It was the second night hunting for it when I got one. It was in a field of beets eating the tops. I waited for it to get where I wanted it and lined up the shot. Just as I pulled the trigger, it raised its head and opened its mouth. The boar was looking right up at me in the stand, and the Barnes Triple Shock bullet went right down its throat. When Robert opened it up, he laughed and said "goulash"! The insides were like a stew, and just poured out. Robert reached in and pulled out a big chunk of bone. It was backbone, and that pig had dropped on the spot without a twitch.

Not one bit of edible meat was wasted, thanks to the pig swallowing the bullet.

If anyone is interested, look up Hunt In Poland, and talk to James Radziewicz. He is the American who handled most of the details to get the trip to happen. The hunting there is mostly at night, and it is their way. When in their country, do as they do. I had a great time and will post more when I get the files from my phone to my computer. The computer does not want to download them, so I am trying to figure out another way.

Didn't get to talk much to the girls. I used the internet to find out how to order my coffee and drinks in the bar. The vodka was good, except the grass flavored variety.

Looks like you had a good time. I would have thought that the airlines would not have permitted reloaded ammo but obviously this was fortunately not the case.

Thanks for the report Piller! I was talking to some fellas from Poland at last year's DSC Convention and it seemed to cheap to be true. I kept wondering about the hidden fees? I may have to go ahead and give it a try. I'm planning a second Africa trip this fall and maybe a Scotland trip for red stag next year.

I know you're kidding.. :D :D :D ..Everything I killed in Africa 5 years ago was with a .30-'06 Parker Hale and Remington Core-Lokt. Those magically tough beasts didn't have their mojo.

They don't know it's reloads if you put in in factory boxes 8)

Great story. Glad you enjoyed it.

Those red stags and hinds can be a handful!

I have used 30/30 on them and the pip squeak 243.

Roe are stronger than you think and can run a long was with a perfect shot!

Good for you :D

I did have the reloads mixed in with factory ammo in factory boxes. They only checked the first two rounds per box.

No hidden fees. It was as promised.

I had no idea! That's probably cheaper than an elk hunt in Montana. Looks like great fun. Wonder if they'd let me use my '86 in 45-90?

Thank you for a great post on your great hunt!

So, what was the weight of that boar? He looks pig fat like the wild ones down at Hondo- Action Outdoors.

The boar was only about 250 lbs. It was very well fed. The guide Robert and I picked it up without a lot of trouble. Neither one of us could lift it alone. Robert was getting a little nervous that I was waiting too long as I decided whether or not to shoot.

Neat pics Piller.......are those the stags that excellent but unobtainable handgun grips are made from?---)---6

I got to throw this in...I'm impulsive.........Did you hear about the two Polish guys walking down the street when they came upon a dog licking his testicles? One guy said to the other, "man! I wish I could do that!" The other Polish guy says, "yea, but don't you think you ought to pet him first?"

I have seen that on the internet. Glad I finally read someone who actually went. Did not know the hunting was at night. Would a guy need a night scope?
Little leery about flying to Europe (or much anywhere) right now. And wondered how much gun red tape one would have to jump through. Do they have gun rentals so no flying with guns over seas?

A good scope is all you really need. My Nikon is not a night scope. I will have one with an illuminated reticle before the next time. They do rent rifles, but it was much cheaper to bring my own. Not much red tape. $75 and a form sent to the Polish embassy in Los Angeles. A good locking case and a few minutes of inspection at the airport. It took longer to have the Polish security guards check me out of Poland than to leave the U.S. with it. There was a fee at the airport to go back out with it. Security took about 15 minutes to read the form from the Embassy and check the serial number on my rifle.
