Ahhh, Wyoming. What's not to like?

Post by jnyork »

Wyoming has the most gun dealer licenses per capita in the country, even as the number of licenses overall continues to fall, a recently published study says.

There are about 95 gun dealers per 100,000 residents in Wyoming — the highest percentage of any state in the country, according to an analysis from the Violence Policy Center.

The second-highest state, Montana, has 91 dealers per 100,000 and the third-highest, Alaska, has 81.

Nationally, there are about 18 dealers per 100,000 people, the study says. Many of the coastal states with high populations have relatively few dealers.

The study analyzed data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was published by the Violence Policy Center, a D.C.-based group that works to reduce gun violence and monitor the firearms industry.

The study tracks the number of type one Federal Firearm Licenses — the basic federal license that allow people to deal firearms. The license does not include pawnbrokers, who need a different type of license.

The total number of such licenses has dropped 77 percent across the country since new regulations went into effect in 1994, the group said.

The regulations increased the price of licensing, requiring applicants to notify the chief law enforcement officer in their community of their intent to apply, and making applicants fill out a form certifying their business were compliant with all state and local laws.
